Joseph Hagenmayer J. INQUIRER SUBURBAN STAFF Joseph A. D'Onofrio, 55, a talented Philadelphia violinist who was a charter member of the Philly Pops, died of a heart attack Friday at Vir-tua-West Jersey Hospital Voorhees. He was stricken while driving through Cherry Hill. Mr.

D'Onofrio, a Center City resident, had South Philadelphia roots and was a graduate of South Philadelphia High School. He received his first violin lessons from his father, Joseph D'Onofrio, who was the orchestra manager for the Philadelphia Lyric Opera Company and also did a great deal of theater work. Mr. D'Onofrio later studied at the Settlement Music School and at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where he received a full scholarship. While in high school, Mr.

D'Onofrio was one of young string instrument players selected by Eugene Orman-dy to attend the International String Congress. Mr. D'Onofrio was the principal second violinist for Peter Nero and the Philly Pops beginning with the first concert in November 1979. He also had been first violinist for Orchestra 2001 since its inception in 1988 and was the founder and artistic director for Orchestra Vivaldi of Philadelphia, which performed in the early 1990s. "He was a tremendously valued member of Orchestra 2001," said Jatnes Freeman, the group's artistic director.

"He was a fine violinist anil a very bright man with a lot of ideas, and was valuable not just to Orchestra 2001 but to many other musical groups in the area." The last piece Mr. D'Onofrio performed with Orchestra 2001 was Aaron Copland's Quiet City at a benefit concert at Swarthmore College onj April 25. The orchestra planned to-add the piece to its concert last night at the Academy of Music as a tribute to Mr. D'Onofrio, Freeman said. Norman Spielberg, orchestra manager for the Philly Pops, said Mr.

D'pnofrio "was a real character, an extremely astute observer and a highly intelligent reasoner who nver held back his opinion. He had a good sense of humor was a good joke teller, and always ended wth his patented chuckle." Mr. D'Onofrio was the orchestra manager for several of Burt Bach-arjch's East Coast concert tours in the early 1980s. Edward Cascarella, his brother-in-law, recalled that "Joe was very wll schooled in music, but his performances came totally from the heart that's how he approached mfrsic." yir. D'Onofrio's career included affiliations with the Delaware Symphony, the Aspen Festival Orchestra in Aspen, and the Princeton Cfiamber Orchestra.

He was a past cajconcertmaster with the Opera Company of Philadelphia. In recent years, he had begun giving private lessons, particularly in Cherry Hill, Mount Laurel and West Chester.
