Tuesday, October 20, 1998 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER F5 AMTF, with a surprise winner, and Arden grab 4 Barrymores Barrymore oversight committee, -y Ninety-two productions by 28 com-' panies were eligible for this yearns awards. All 92 were seen by at leas't seven nominators; 57 of them, judged noteworthy in at least one; respect, were reviewed, by the nominating panel. The Arden dominated the nomU nations, receiving 24 for four of its five 1997-98 shows. The Walnut' Street Theatre had 15 nominations 12 for its main-stage season and three for its studio series of small-scale plays. Twenty companies were nominated at least once.

theater workshops. Honoring the theatrical Barrymore family's long association with Philadelphia (Lionel, Ethel and John Barrymore were all born here), the Barrymore Awards are administered by the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, a service organization for area nonprofit companies. Winners and nominees in the acting and stagecraft categories are picked by a 40-member committee of theatergoers and theater professionals; recipients of special awards are selected by individual panels or the BARRYMORES from F1 dfna. It was Brennan's second consecutive Barrymore; he' won last season for his role as King Arthur in the Walnut's Camelot. Another Walnut player, Susan Dawn Carson, was named best actress in a musical for Blood Brothers.

"Named best actress in a play was Janis Dardaris for her portrayal of the earthy Josie Hogan in Venture Theater's A Moon for the Misbegotten. Honors for best actor in a play went to Jarlath Conroy for his Herculean performance as a bedridden, half-mad retired Irish policeman in Lantern Theater Company's The Steward of Christendom. Lantern had another winner in Maggie Siff, who was named best supporting actress for Ghosts. Among the evening's pithy acceptance remarks were those of playwright Jules Tasca, whose The Balkan Women was named best new play. "I challenge the theaters in Philadelphia in the year 2000 to do all new plays," he said, "and make it the most progressive theater town in the United States." Also notable were the comments of sound designer Schnirman, who said he had "spent 20 years of my life trying not to be noticed.

Thank you for noticing me." Pleasing the audience, too, was Tony Freeman, named best supporting actor in a musical, who was cast in Merrily We Roll Along after another performer became unavailable. After acknowledging family members who had flown in from Houston and Cincinnati, he added thanks to the actor who didn't get the part. The awards ceremony was punctuated by snatches of songs from contemporary musicals, with special lyrics applicable to Philadelphia theater, sung with gusto by Jil- ago in Chapel Hill," said the University of North Carolina graduate, "and I haven't won one yet. But I'm still fighting." The $5,000 First Union Community Service Award, honoring partnerships between theater companies and specific communities, went to actor Bruce Robinson for his work with African American children in the Mitchell-Robinson Youth Theatre. The $2,500 Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News Award for Excellence in Theater Education was presented to the People's Light Theatre Company's New Voices Ensemble, which provides a long-term theater experience to young people in the theater's area.

Holley Webster, who for 23 years has published Stage, a monthly newsletter that is the only publication devoted entirely to area theater, received a special recognition award. "If you'll keep on creating and producing," she said, "I'll keep on gathering and publishing." Webster also has organized 22 annual JACKIE CHAfi CHRIS TUCKER rl tea r.ica surprise. V'l i IT I line Ringle, Julianna Schauerman and John Monforto. Far less successful, and contributing substantially to the ceremony's running well over two hours, were snippets of commentary on every nominee, written by the judges and read by presenters before the announcement of each name. Philadelphia favorite Ringle, a statuesque cabaret singer and actress, emceed the ceremony, along with David Ogden Stiers (Major Winchester on the TV series MASH), who directed a play in the Walnut Street Theatre's Independence Studio on 3 two seasons back.

In addition to the Haas Award and the acting and stagecraft prizes, four other awards were presented. Frank CP. McGlinn, 83, who has given support and counsel to many area theater companies, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. McGlinn, who has served on the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, is an avid collector of theater memorabilia and has donated about 60,000 items to area institutions. The citation, read by theater critic Clarke Groome and Villanova theater department chairman Peter M.

Donohue, called McGlinn "the heart and soul of the Philadelphia theater community the most knowledgeable local theater historian alive." Accepting the award, supported by two of his four daughters, the frail former board member of the Walnut said, "It's great to be home again." He lauded the Philadelphia theater renaissance that began in the 1970s, called for increased government funding for theater, and virtually snorted the name of Sen. Jesse Helms N.C.).
