Honors for best actor in a play went to Jarlath Conroy for his Herculean performance as a bedridden, half-mad retired Irish policeman in Lantern Theater Company's The Steward of Christendom. Lantern had another winner in Maggie Siff, who was named best supporting actress for Ghosts. Among the evening's pithy acceptance remarks were those of playwright Jules Tasca, whose The Balkan Women was named best new play. "I challenge the theaters in Philadelphia in the year 2000 to do all new plays," he said, "and make it the most progressive theater town in the United States." Also notable were the comments of sound designer Schnirman, who said he had "spent 20 years of my life trying not to be noticed.

Thank you for noticing me." Pleasing the audience, too, was Tony Freeman, named best supporting actor in a musical, who was cast in Merrily We Roll Along after another performer became unavailable. After acknowledging family members who had flown in from Houston and Cincinnati, he added thanks to the actor who didn't get the part. The citation, read by theater critic Clarke Groome and Villanova theater department chairman Peter M.

Donohue, called McGlinn "the heart and soul of the Philadelphia theater community the most knowledgeable local theater historian alive." Accepting the award, supported by two of his four daughters, the frail former board member of the Walnut said, "It's great to be home again."
