Wednesday, June 11, 2008 Page 5A Court records: Man used toddler son as human shield Elnora watches, waits as waters appear to crest HAMMOND (AP) A man used his 2-year-old son as a human shield in a fight with park rangers after he was caught drinking beer in a federal campground, court records allege. Joshua Don Young, 27, of Chesterton, was ordered held without bond after he told a federal magistrate that he has a history of criminal and mental health issues and has used marijuana and cocaine for years. Young was arraigned Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Hammond.

He was charged with two counts of assaulting federal officers. Defense attorney Michael Bosch said Young's family disputes the idea that Young used his son as a "human shield." "He was just out visit ing some family who were camping in the Dunes," Bosch said. "He had a beer. And the next thing he knew, he's in jail." According to court documents, Young refused to pour out a six-pack of beer on May 3 after U.S. Park Service Rangers Anthony Papesh and Jennifer Jackson caught him with alcohol in the Dunewood Campground in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Alcohol is prohibited in the campground. Young allegedly threw cold campfire ashes into Papesh's eyes and pushed him down a flight of steps, and Jackson struck Young in the leg with her baton. But Young grabbed the baton and struck both her and Papesh in the head, the documents allege. prl wrj ELNORA (AP) Berms of white sandbags and concrete barriers held back the White River from swallowing this rural community Tuesday, leaving residents little choice but to wait and watch, hoping a historic deluge would soon recede. The worst flooding in modern Indiana history pushed past cornfields to reach the Daviess County town of Elnora, about 100 miles southwest of Indianapolis, where Marines and Indiana National Guard soldiers a day earlier built the berms to hold back the river.

State officials said they could not yet place a dollar estimate on the losses from homes and businesses destroyed and damaged by the floods that have claimed three lives across Indiana. Up to 10 inches of rain Saturday started the worst flooding in modern history. About 300 people remained in shelters Tuesday, down from more than 1,200 on Sunday, said Executive Director Joe Wainscott of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. He could not estimate the total number of people forced to abandon their homes. Eighteen miles to the southwest, officials ordered residents to evacuate north of Maysville after floodwa-ters overtopped a levee Monday night.

Residents were being evacuated to a school in Washington. A Daviess County sheriff's dispatcher estimated as many as 300 people could be affected. Most Elnora residents left after voluntary evacuation orders came late Monday. Only 44 people in 19 homes stayed, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which sent officers from house to house after midnight to check for the disabled and homebound. Some of those residents returned Associated Press A farm is surrounded by floodwater from the White River as it overran its banks and levees near Elnora Tuesday.

The report decried sexual abuse as reprehensible and a sin. But the Southern Baptist principle of local church autonomy means it's up to individual churches and not the convention to screen employees and take action against offenders, the committee said.
