Gordon threw touchdown passes of 8 yards to Shaz Brown Quakers hold on to win by one Perm's offense got off to a flying start, then sputtered as Dartmouth just missed an upset. ByJoeJuIiano INQUIRER STAFF WRITER HANOVER, N.H. This wasn't the way Perm's Ivy League opener was supposed to play out. The Quakers were mired in quicksand on offense yesterday after scoring three early touchdowns. They couldn't kick a field goal.

They couldn't avoid penalties. Meanwhile, Dartmouth grew in confidence, getting ready to spring the first big upset of the Ivy season. The Big Green had a chance to push the preseason favorites to overtime after Michael Gratch scored from 2 yards out with 1 minute, 38 seconds to play. But Perm's Kyle Chaffin, a seldom-used defensive end, put an end to the upset bid at Memorial Field. He blocked the extra-point try by freshman Tyler Lavin to preserve the Quakers' 21-20 victory on a sunny autumn day on which the visitors did not look like the better team.

Then, again, it's never easy when the Quakers (2-0 overall, 1-0 Ivy) visit the Ivy's northernmost outpost. In two of Perm's Ivy League championship years under coach Al Bagnoli, it has won at Dartmouth by two points (1994) and three points (1998). "I've been here four times, with some pretty good football teams," Bagnoli said. "We've never been able to get out of here and say, 'Well, we won by two You're talking about teams that went on to win 24 in a row. "I knew exactly what we were getting into.

I told our kids that all week. It's not going to be easy. It never is." What a crowd of 5,929 thought it was going to see was a shootout. After the first four possessions of the game, the score was 14-14, and it appeared as if 50 points would not be enough to win. But it didn't work that way.

The Quakers scored their third touchdown Kris Ryan's third of the game, following a fumble recovery by Chris Pennington less than six minutes into the second quarter and never scored again. Freshman Bryan Arguello missed field-goal attempts of 28 37 yards. The first failure came after the Quakers tried to pass on third and goal from the 1 and Gavin Hoffman was sacked for a 9-yard loss. But Richmond scored 16 straight points to grab a 23-17 lead, including a 74-yard scoring run by Ouden with 5:12 left in the third period. The Wildcats stopped the run with a critical score late in that same quarter, however, when Brown grabbed a 24-yard scor Then there was the contribution of Chaffin, the 6-foot-3 junior from Penn Charter who plays in the middle of the defense on opponents' field-goal and extra-point attempts because of his height and jumping ability. The Big Green had their own problems on offense after the 14-14 start but rallied late. A 31-yard pass from Greg Smith, a graduate of Lenape High in South Jersey, to Murphy got them to the Penn 6, and they scored two plays later on Gratch's run. But Chaffin got high enough in the middle to swat down the point-after attempt.

"We call the block for me to come in from the left side of center or the right side, and the call was to the right side," Chaffin said. "I was able to see it and deflect it." The Quakers pounced on the ensuing onside kick. Then Ryan rushed twice for 12 yards and a key first down, giving him a final total of 134 yards on 34 carries, and Penn ran out the clock. In two weeks, Dartmouth has lost on a touchdown with four seconds left and a blocked extra-point try. The Quakers, who haven't experienced that kind of In one unusual note, the were no successful conversion kicks in yesterday's game.

La Salle did make a two-point conversion in the first half, when Steve Szydlik hit Salomone for an 8-6 lead. The Explorers' Brian Small rushed 12 times for 67 yards, teaming with Crimmel for a strong running game. Travers was 14 for 32 for 186 yards and a TD. Mike McKeown caught five passes for 82 yards, Small grabbed two for 49 yards, and Dave Murnane caught three for 28 yards. two touchdowns and Brian West-brook caught seven passes for 128 yards to help Villanova beat the 17th-ranked Spiders, who had suffered narrow losses against Division I-A schools Virginia and Vanderbilt.

"It really looked bleak for us, especially with the Richmond offense, and the way they drain the clock," Villanova coach Andy Talley said. "Somehow we found a way to get it done." Richmond drove 88 yards to open the scoring, capping the LEE MARRINER Associated Press get past Penn's Travis Belden. The Quakers won because of the performances of some unsung players. Ryan Lazzeri punted four times in the fourth quarter for a 42.3-yard average to make Dartmouth's comeback attempt a little tougher. Safety Kumle Williams' hit on receiver Bob Murphy on a fourth-down pass stopped the Big Green short perhaps two inches away from a first down with 5:25 remaining.

a 6-0 lead, the Explorers scored 20 straight points. Crimmel scored on runs of 30 and 10 yards the 10-yarder was the game-winner in the fourth quarter and tight end John Salomone caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from John Travers. The Explorers had been 2-0 only three times before this season. In 1934, the only undefeated season in La Salle history, the Explorers tied their third game. In both 1936 and 1941, the team lost its third game after a pair of opening victories.
