Villanova soccer coach Larry Sullivan remembers taking his nephew to an Olympic Development Program state tryout camp four or five years ago and trying to convince the coaches that his sister's kid was a real goal-scorer, even- though Chris Albright was playing a mid-field role for Sullivan's FC Bayern club team. "They wouldn't even take him the first year," Sullivan said. "They said: 'We don't think he's got No one identified him as an attacking player." By now, anyone can see that Albright is an attacker. He scored four goals for the United States under-20 national team last week in three games during CONCACAF qualifying in Trinidad and Tobago for the World Youth Championships. The Penn Charter graduate, who spent the first 11 years of his life in Philadelphia before moving to Mer-chantville, scored 11 goals as a freshman last season for Virginia, the NCAA runner-up.

He is likely to improve. on that total this fall, because he probably will move from wide midfielder to a forward spot now that Cavaliers stars Ben Olson and Chris West have left school early for Major League Soccer. There was pressure to perform in the under-20 qualifying, Albright said, after the way the United States played in the World Cup. "Oh, yeah, we actually talked about that," he said. Before the tournament, he remembers, the under-20 team's coach, Sigi Schmid of UCLA, told his players: "The pressure is on you to pick up the slack where the World Cup team failed." Albright has the bloodlines for success.

His father, John, and Sullivan played together at Temple. He has uncles on both sides of his family who played and coached the game. Sullivan figures that the Albrights provided Chris' exceptional quickness and that the Sullivans gave him his smoothness and agility, "He can jump out of the building," Sullivan said. Albright said he would like to in MLS eventually, but first, "if I could go play with a European club. That's kind of everyone's dream." The right The Washington Post reported yesterday that D.C.

United coach Bruce Arena next week was likely to be offered the job of coaching the U.S. national team. Today, though, the Post reports that Alan Rothenberg, the U.S. Soccer Federation president, has backed off plans to hire Arena. However, Arena still would seem to be the right choice, the obvious choice.

Earlier talk that the United States would go back to Bora Milutinovic or look to Carlos Alberto Parreira didn't make much sense. Bora is a quick-fix artist, not the man to chart the future course- of the national team. (Who can understand Bora-speak, anyway?) In addition to churning out NCAA champions at Virginia and molding D.C. United into an instant MLS dynasty, Arena had the '96 U.S. Olympic team playing solid, international-level soccer.

And if he speaks his mind, that's something U.S. Soccer, the governing body of the sport in this country, needs, too. Before the World Cup, U.S. players and U.S. Soccer bureaucrats had an inflated opinion of where the country stood in the soccer world.

Arena likely wouldn't have one. Around the world. After the World Cup, Ronaldo, the Brazilian superstar, went underground but stopped off in Las Vegas on vacation. Thirty-two top European clubs are talking about forming a Super League starting in 2000. Vander-ley Luxemburgo, who twice has coached teams to the Brazilian-league titles, was hired Wednesday as Brazil's national-team coach.

He said one of his first tasks would be to end the "vanity" that plagued the team in France. In Germany, Jens Jeremies, who landed that kidney shot to Claudio Reyna in the opening minute of the World Cup game, moves to Bayern Munich from crosstown rival 1860. Jeremies will be joined at Bayern by Iranian striker Ali Daei. Bayern Leverkusen signed midfielder Fran-kie Hejduk, the one U.S. player who really improved his stock at the World Cup.

The U.S. Women's Cup will be played on the East Coast next month, but there will be no games within a couple of hours of Philadelphia. The U.S. national team will play Mexico on Sept. 12 in Foxboro, Russia on Sept.

PN PP Horse (Jockey) Wgt Odds 3 3 Vivacious Suzi (O Castillo) 116 9-5 Scoreboard driver's car and Commentary ByBUiLyon Tyson may not want back in ring By Brian Miller INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT BOYERTOWN, Pa. A young, underrated Boyertown team almost shocked powerful Brooklawn last night in the second round of the American Legion Mid-Atlantic Regional at Bear Stadium. But the New Jersey state champions, favored to win this event by virtue of their 48-1 record coming in, played like champions in crunch time, taking advantage of a Boyer- town mistake to score five un, -earned runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game before win- ning it, 9-8, on Matt Furman's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th. Boyertown (38-16) shocked Brook-lawn by jumping out to a 7-1 lead after three innings.

Brooklawn starter Jeff Flegler had suffered a bee sting on his right pitching elbow in Thursday's 23-2 win over Rome (N.Y.) and never seemed comfortable on the hill against -the Bears. Flegler allowed eight' hits and seven earned runs in 2 ini nings of work, and he was chased when Boyertown broke the game open with a five-run third inning. John Oehler had three hits for Brooklawn, including a double and homer. Cain was scheduled to play Frederick (Md.) in last night's other game. In the day's first game, delayed one hour and 32 minutes by New Castle evened its record at 1-1 in the national event with an 8-5 win over Petersburg, the West Vrr ginia champion.

Aaron Lewis paced the Delaware champion with two hits, including a double. Lewis also scored three runs. Brooklawn opens today's schedule with a 10 a.m. game against Danville, the Virginia champion. Cain plays New Castle at 5 p.m.

The semifinals will be played at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. tomorrow, with the championship game set for 7 p.m.. on Monday. New Castle (Del.) 000021 320 8 12 4 Petersburg (W.Va.) 010 001120 5 10 4 WP: Dan McGinnes.

Commission reckons that it could hold a hearing to accommodate Tyson's request within two to three weeks. Elias Ghanem, a physician who is chairman of the Nevada commission, said: "Maybe he Tyson came back to his senses and decided the best way to go about this was to; come back to the state that revoked his license." Keep a good thought, Doctor, but the inescapable conclusion is that Tyson's team is coming back to Nevada, hat in hand, because it thought it would get the boot from New Jersey. "We can always go back to New Jersey if it's bad in Nevada," said Shelly Finkel, who is Tyson's adviser; and who, you think, might be the only one who doesn't have one arm around the fighter's shoulder while rummaging through Tyson's pockets for loose change with the other.j Withdrawing from New Jersey and going to Nevada was the right move and the smart move, but it was also, really, the only move. And if Nevada does deny restoration of his license, I cannot shake the feeling that, inside, Tyson wilj not be all that devastated. 38-3573 35-3873 36-3773 35-3873 38-3573 37-3774 37-3774 37-3774 35-3974 37-3774 39-3574 38-3674 37-3774 38-3674 39-3574 39-3574 39-3675 40-3575 39-3675 39-36 75 38-3775 38-3876 39-3776 39-3776 37-4077 38-3977 38-3977 37-4077 39-3877 39-3877 39-3877 36-4177 41-3778 36-4278 41-3778 41-3778 41-3778 39-3978 41-3879 41-3879 41-3879 42-3779 40-4080 John Brodie 40-40i-80," Lee Elder 42-3880 Bob Lunn 39-4180 Bunky Henry 41-4081 Lou Graham 40-4181 Charlie Owens 41-40 81 MLS EAST LSO Pts CFCA 20 5 6 48 58 35 N.Y.N.J.

Tyson's team withdrew its application for a boxing license in New Jersey on Thursday. There was one compelling reason for them to do this: They were reasonably certain they weren't going to get approval, and they were going to alienate Nevada and most of the boxing business in the process.

New Jersey has casinos, too, as you may have heard. It also has politicians, some of whom took oratorical stands against the notion of removing Tyson's boxing ban. So it was going to be interesting to see which faction prevailed. But it never came to that Tyson's request for a hearing was taken back less than 24 hours before the hearing was to start. It was a transparent attempt at an end run by Tyson's team to bypass Nevada, pathetically transparent even by boxing's standards, and so transparent that, for once, even those in charge couldn't miss seeing it.

Between what he owes in back taxes, what Don King siphoned from him, and what he himself spent with astonishing recklessness, he is said to be in considerable fiscal anguish. In little more than a decade, he won hundreds of millions, yet when he reaches into his pockets now, he finds mostly lint.

In addition, you wonder what sort of pressure Las Vegas casinos might exert. Tyson is a cash cow; Fight nights with Tyson as the headliner create enormous table drops. Tens of millions of dollars make the journey across the green felt tables to the house from the satin-lined pockets of high rollers who have been flown in and comped lavishly by casinos. Tyson is a cottage industry all by himself, worth so much to the gambling trade in the neon desert that he was repeatedly invited back despite unprecedented levels of crowd violence, including a drive-by murder, on the evenings when he made a fist. Nevada gets first crack at him again, which is as it should be Juli Inkster 75-75150 Smriti Mehra 73-77150 Helen Dobson 80-71151 Alison Nicholas 79-72151 Tina Fischer 78-73151 Hiromi Kobayashi 77-74151 Alison Munt 81-71152 Se Ri Pak 78-74152 Estefania Knuth 77-75152 Karrie Webb 76-76152 Dale Reid 73-79152 Sherri Steinhauer 81-72153 Donna Andrews 81-72153 Laura Philo 80-73153 Chris Johnson 79-74153 Helen Wadsworth 79-74153 Joanne Morley 79-74153 Kathryn Marshall 79-74153 Carin Koch 79-74153 Pat Hurst 76-77153 Mutfin Spencer-Devlin 82-72154 Federica Dassu 82-72154 Iben Tinning 80-74154 Kris Tschetter 79-75154 Cathy Johnston-Forbes 78-76154 Calrin Nilsmark 77-77154 Lora Fairclough 77-77154 Caroline McMillan 76-78154 Riikka Hakkarainen 75-79154 Wendy DoolanJ 83-72155 Vickie Odegard 82-73155 Maria Hjorth A 82-73165 Barb Whitehead 80-75155 Diane Barnard 79-76155 Mayumi Hirase 78-77155 Mollis Stacy 82-74156 Laurette Maritz 80-76156 Stephanie Dallongeville 80-76156 Kim Saiki 80-76156 Karen Pearce 79-77156 Cindy Figg-Currier Stephanie Lowe 77-79156 Tina' Barrett 77-79156 Caroline Emilee Lone Kane Myra Murray Julie Forbes Charlotta Cindy Raquel Liselotte Laura Corinne Anna Berg First LEADERS Dave Jose Maria Dana Bruce George Tom Shaw Mike Jim Dent Jim Colbert John Babe Hiskey Billy King Ed Dougherty Tommy Hugh John Jacobs Tom Wargo Tom Jenkins Randy Bruce Gil Morgan Bob Dickson Gary Player KermitZarley Walter Hall Will Sowles Larry Laoretti WNBA EAST Pet.
