'til 9 P.M. 1898, but music was the avocation of the young Ives who became a wealthy insurance broker and who originated the idea of estate planning and of training sales agents. AHEAD OF HIS TIME Without prospect of performance, Ives gave free rein to his composition, writing in polytonalities, counterpoint unheard of at his time, harmonies beyond the ken of normal analysis, tone clusters, and rhythmic invention a generation ahead of his time. Written between 1903 and 1914, the "Three Places in New England" was not played until 1930 when Nicholas Slo-nimsky led the premiere in Boston with his Chamber Orchestra. Ives was in New York when Slonimsky repeated the program at Town Hall in 1931 to boos and hisses.

Master plate 27686, from which no impressions will be made, and 27689 were assigned during that month. Also sent to press in December were Nos. 27593 and 27625 for the 8c airmail in sheet form. Other plates put into use were for 3c and 5c coils and 8c booklets and will be most difficult to locate, since they will be trimmed off in the process of production.
