STONE Staff writer A longleaf pine ecosystem in Aiken County forms a permanent memorial not only to former Aiken mayor Frank P. Henderson, but now to his great-granddaughter as well.

Rosetta Miller of New York City, Sarasota, and Pawleys Island, died in her sleep at her home in Sarasota on Feb. 17, 2007. Miller, a native of Columbia, was 71 at the time of her death. Her ashes are to be buried in her family plot in Aiken, and a memorial service was to be held in New York, according to published reports in the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger. Miller bequeathed 200 acres in Aiken County to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for the formation of the pine ecosystem in 1993 and requested it be dedicated in memory of the late Mayor Henderson.

Henderson was elected mayor of Aiken in 1890, according to Allen Riddick of the Aiken County Historical Society. "The specific area she donated is housing a longleaf ecosystem. Longleaf pine used to be 90 million acres for their total range, and it's been decimated down to about 3 million acres. With her con- tribution, we're able to add to the restoration effort for this specific and special habitat. It has a lot of diversity to it, and there's such a loss of that habitat that regenerating this diversified habitat is one of DNR's missions," said Brett Moule, manager of the Henderson Heritage Preserve.

Miller is survived by her husband, Samuel Miller, director emeritus of the Newark Museum. He and Rosetta Miller were major supporters of the museum, and her fundraising efforts were cited as key in a 1989 museum renovation designed by noted architect Michael Graves. Miller was valedictorian of her class at Dreher High School in Columbia and received voice training in New York. She pursued a performing career on New York's cabaret circuit, but retired from the stage in 1977 upon her marriage to Samuel Miller. She brought her flair for the performing arts to her fundraising and publicity, efforts for the Newark Museum through the years, according to published reports.

Her philanthropic efforts also benefited the World Monument Fund and its Preah Khan temple restoration efforts in Angkor, Cambodia. Contributions in Miller's memory can be made to the Newark Museum, 49 Washington Newark, N.J. 07012. Contact Suzanne Stone at com.
