TOWNSEND F.H. INC Charles H. Liggeons Jr. Charles H. Liggeons firefighter By Rusty Pray INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Charles H.

Liggeons 67, a retired Philadelphia firefighter, an amateur artist and a favorite of neighborhood children, died Friday of cancer of the esophagus at his home in West Oak Lane. After a brief stint as a Philadelphia police officer there were too many nuts on the street, he told his wife Mr. Liggeons joined the Fire Department in 1956. He made stops, with several engine and ladder companies in his 20 years with the working primarily as a driver in West Philadelphia. He retired as a lieutenant from the old Engine 65 at 54th Street and Haver-ford Avenue.

Mr. Liggeons gladly lent a hand whenever the Fire Department needed signs painted or artwork done for safety or public service campaigns. He loved to paint in wa-tercolor and draw in pastels, although his only formal training consisted of the classes he took as a boy at the Museum of Art. He grew up in West Philadelphia, and everyone in the neighborhood knew him as "Puggie," a nickname given to him by his mother, Mary, while she was still carrying him. Mr.

Liggeons' interest in public safety went back almost that far. As a schoolboy at Brooks Elementary, he was on safety patrol. Back then, older students helped the younger children cross the street. His beat was the intersection of 56th Street and Wyalusing Avenue, where he often helped a girl a little younger than himself, Joan Berry, negotiate the intersection. He had no way of knowing it at the time, but that girl was his future wife.

After he graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1951, he spent four years in the Air Force, serving during the Korean War. Then he joined the Police Department, a move that persuaded him his future lay in fighting fires. He and the girl he helped across the street were married in 1963, and they settled in West Oak Lane to raise their children. One day after their sons were born, their doorbell rang, said Mr. Liggeons' wife, a retired schoolteacher.

It was a boy of 9 or 10, asking for a playmate. She told him her sons were napping. "I don't mean the little boys," the visitor said. "I mean the big boy." Mr. Liggeons was like that with children, someone they could call on to play ball on the corner lot or take them for ice cream.

After he left the Fire Department, Mr. Liggeons worked several "jobs, related mostly to fire and public safety. His last was with the Postal Service as a truck driver out of 30th Street Station. He retired in 1994. Along with his wife and mother, Mr.

Liggeons is survived by sons Chad and Craig; a daughter, Toya; his father, Charles three sisters; and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, 7101 N. 20th St. Friends may call at 10 a.m.
