(Special) The 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Lady chapel enshrined on Monte Cassino hill, near the Benedictine Monastery of St. Mein-rad in Southern Indiana, has just been observed. Notables present included Archbishop Joseph E.

Hitter of Indianapolis and the Kt. Rev. Ignatius Esser, O.S.B., Abbot of St Meinrad's. The origin of the chapel goes back to 1857, when Father Isidore Hobi, a monk of the abbey, with several students attached a picture of the Blessed Virgin to a black oak tree on the top of Monte Cassino hill as a shrine to which they came to pray. A few years later a wooden chapel was erected, the late Bishop Herman Alerding of Fort Wayne being one of the students who helped roof it.

About two years later the sandstone chapel shown above was built. In 1872, when the smallpox epi demic nearly decimated the town of St Meinrad, the students made a vow to make an annual pilgrim age to Our Lady's shrine at Monte Cardinal Says Norwalk, Conn.
