The dramatization of part of Sigrid Undset's Nobel prize-winning novel cen tered on Norway's Catholic Mid dle Ages has proved to be a boom to the rejuvenation of Catholicism, at least indirectly, in this predominantly non-Catholic country. The stage adaptation of The Bridal Wreath has become such a success that the play has now been translated into English and German. The play, the first part of the historical trilogy, Kristin Lavransdatter, had its premiere at the New Theater here last August. It is still playing to capacity audiences.

It was on the following day that the 21 hostage prison guards were returned to safety unharmed after the state militia besieged, the prison. Originally the lives of the guards had been threatened by the rioting prisoners if any force was used by law enforcement officers. Prior to Father Lynam's arrival at the prison, the assistant warden had been killed and the warden's life endangered.

Item Hits Masonic Public School Rite Fresno, Calif. The Central California Register, newspaper of the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno, has protested Masonic dedications of 'public schools. The newspaper said the Masons conducted dedications in Selma, Bakersfield, Atwater, and Sanger last year.

It said plans call for the Masons to dedicate a new high school in Merced in September. Seeing that public schools are in fact dependent on all of us for support," the weekly said, 'we naturally oppose the ef forts of any special interest Masons included to monopolize school dedications." 'Popular' in Holland The Hague. The Netherlands Institute for Public Opinion con ducted a poll to discover the "most popular" woman in the country. The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional the city's obscene literature ordinance.

The test came on the basis of a ban on the novel Peyton Place. The court ruled that the language of the ordinance was "vague and uncertain." Comics Sale at Peak New York. Since the inauguration in 1954 of an industry code banning horror and sex, comics magazines reached a new high circulation of 600, 000,000 a year, reported John Goldwater, president of the Comics Magazine Association of America. He denied reports the code had hurt comics sales. Revive Study of East London.

Supporters of the Society of St. John Chrysostom, a long-dormant Catholic organi zation, met to revive the society to foster the study of Eastern Christianity. Archbishop Thomas Toolen of Mobile, speaking after the Divine Liturgy climaxing the dedication and blessing of the Melkite church on lower Southside, called on those present to play an active part in this return of the Orthodox Christians. In Ex-Nazi Aerie Washington. The Berchtes-gaden Retreat House, once the mountain headquarters of high-ranking Nazi officers, will be the site for two retreats for Catholic chaplains serving with the U. S.

More than $140,000 has been received in cash donations and pledges in the drive to expand Juneau's Cathedral. The church, built more than 50 years ago, has a seating capacity of 120. The new church will seat at least 400. Pope Names Lutheran Oslo, Norway. John XXIII has appointed a Lutheran pro fessor a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

Ninety-five members of the American Society of Newspaper Editors voted 50 "yes" and 45 "no" on the question of whether a Catholic could be elected President of the U. S. The ballot was taken at a recent meeting of the society held here. Fight Death Penalty Chicago. The Illinois Committee to Abolish Capital Punishment is gaining support for measures that would impose a six-year moratorium on the death penalty in the state.

Auxiliary Bishop Bernard J. Sheil of Chicago is chairman of the committee. Cardinal Is Honored Philadelphia. The Notre Dame Club of this city has honored Cardinal O'Hara, C.S.C., a former president of the university, as the "Man of the Year." In making the award, the club cited the Cardinal as enriching Philadelphia "by devoted zeal in extending the benefits of Catholic education and for nourishing the faith and the spread of its wholesome influence." Pilgrimage for Aged Paris. French Catholic Charities will sponsor a July pilgrimage to Lourdes for 500 old people living in homes for the aged in the Paris area.

This will be the first pilgrimage of its kind. Of the 500, whose average age is 75, 70 are invalids. The pilgrims will be accompanied by 19 nurses and 10 stretcher-bearers. Orthodox Audience Hartford, Conn. Archbishop Iakovos, new head of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America, revealed here that he privately visited John XXIII at the Vatican.

It marked the first time in some 350 years that a Greek Orthodox Archbishop or Bishop had called on the Pontiff. The Archbishop said the Greek Church "reacts very favorably" to the forthcoming Ecumenical Council, while adopting a "wait and see" policy. Institute on Sociology Chestnut Hill, Mass. A summer institute on the sociology of American Catholicism will be held at Boston College June 22-27. The purpose of the institute will be to stimulate objective study of dynamic social and cultural forces that affect Catholicism in the U.

S. Stavangar and Trondheim. Oslo's New Theater, which gives performances exclusively in the reformed language known officially as "New Norwegian, has had a Sigrid Undset season this year. Beside The Wreath, the theater is giving matinee performances of the only serious play written by the Nobel prize-winning novelist, a one-act drama entitled The Gray Marriage Banns. In 1924, Sigrid Undset be came a Catholic.

Two new Catholic high schools in the Los Angeles Archdiocese are being named in honor of Franciscans who collaborated with the famed pioneer missionary, Fra JUnipero Serra, "the Apostle of California," who was a native of Mallorca, Spain. One school will bear the name Fra Juan Crespi; it is under construction in Encino. The other will be named after Fra Fermin Lasuan, and is being constructed in San Pedro. The archdiocese already has a Juni-pero Serra High School. Apostolic Delegate's 1st Consecration Set Baton Rouge, La.

The first Bishop to be consecrated by Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, new Apostolic Delegate to the U.S., after his arrival in the U.S. in May to take up his duties, will be Monsignor Robert Emmet Tracy, who will become Auxiliary Bishop of Lafayette, and Titular Bishop of Ser- gentza on May 19. uo-consecrators at the cere mony, to be held in St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans, will be Bishop Maurice Schexnayder of Lafayette and Auxiliary Bishop Louis Abel Caillouet of New Orleans. Senator Will Receive Canisius Medal May 3 Buffalo, N.Y. Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy of Minnesota will re ceive the Peter Canisius Medal the alumni association of Canisius College May 3. The medal will be presented the Senator by the Rev.

Philip E. Dodson, S.J., president of the college. It is awarded for "personal integrity, unquestioned patriotism, and unique contribution toward the enlightenment of our American people." Presidents of Nations To Meet With Pontiff Vatican City. The visit of England's Queen Mother and Princess Margaret opens a se ries of calls by heads of state on Pope John XXIII. Scheduled to see the Pope are President Giovanni Gronchi Italy, King Paul of Greece (May 21), President Achmed Sukarno of Indonesia, President Alfredo Stroessner of Paraguay, and President Charles de Gaulle of France (June 26).

In the first of a series of three special ser mons, prepared at the request of Bishop Leo A. Pursley, it was announced that lay people are to give responses at every Mass in the Fort Wayne Diocese. Joan of Arc's Nephew Orleans, France. A descendant of St. Joan of Arc was elected Abbot of an ancient, newly restored Benedictine monastery of Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire.

A multi-great-nephew of St. Joan, Father Marie Louis de Haldat du Lys, O.S.B., is the first Abbot here since the close of the 15th century. Million-Dollar Library Omaha, Neb. Ground will be broken June 2 for the new mil lion-dollar Creighton University Library. The library will house approximately 250,000 volumes and planned future expansion will give the building double that capacity.

300 Years in Canada Vatican City. Cardinal Otta- viani, Fro-becretary of the Sa cred Congregation of the Holy Office, will be Papal Legate at celebrations noting 300 years of the establishment of the Canadian Hierarchy at Quebec Oct. 4-8. The Cardinal will begin a month-long tour of the U.S. May 28.

He will return to Rome, however, before attending the rites in Canada. President's Choice Washington. The Rev. Gil bert V. Hartke, director of the famed players of the Catholic University and head of the graduate drama department at the school, has been appointed by President Eisenhower to the 34-member advisory committee that will help plan a proposed National Cultural Center in the nation's capital.

Center for Catholics LaCrosse, Wis. A Catholic student center at LaCrosse State College will be launched as a result of a $100-a-plate dinner attended by some 200 persons. The Newman Club of the state college has 502 members, about one-third of the student body. 2,589 at Communion Philadelphia Two thousand five hundred eighty-nine members of the League of the Sacred Heart composed of policemen, firemen, and park guards attended the annual Communion Mass in the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul.

To Hear Irene Dunne Seattle. Irene Dunne will receive an honorary degree and be the principal speaker at the commencement exercises of Seattle University June 5. More than 300 students will be in the graduation class. National Prayer Day Washington. Memorial Day this year would be a day of prayer for peace under a resolution introduced by Sen.

Kenneth B. Keating of New York. The President would be requested to designate a period on May 30 in which citizens would pray for permanent peace. $6,700,000 Project Niagara Falls, N.Y. Ground breaking for a $1,500,000 science building featured Vincentian Day at Niagara University.

The new structure is the first step in a $6,700,000 development program. Under consideration are the building of a library and administration building. Catholics in Politics Sydney, Australia. A call to active participation in politics was given Australian Catholics by Cardinal Gilroy, Archbishop of Sydney. "It is essential," the Cardinal said, "to have good men in politics.

At present," he continued, "there is only one party which Catholics cannot support, the Communist party." Woman Judge in India Eniakuiam, Inula. The first woman appointed a High Court judge in India, Mrs. Anna Chandy, 54, a member of the Syro-Malankara Rite, was honored at a reception by 15 wom- ens organizations. A lawyer since 1929, she serves on Kerala's High Court. Purchase-of-Care Plan Harrisburg, Pa.

The Hospital Association of Pennsylvania asked the Senate Appropria tions Subcommittee to urge the adoption of a "purchase-of-care" plan that would make denominational hospitals eligible for Commonwealth benefits. It includes today some 82,500 Catholics in a total population of about 333,000 Vatican Radio Warns About Soviet Pledges Vatican City. Vatican Radio cautioned that to trust Soviet Union pledges to respect the integrity of a Free Berlin cut off from the West would be "unrealistic once the principles of dialectical materialism are known." The warning was coupled with an admonition to the free world against a tendency to regard Communism as simply a movement that will "pass off in time." "Nothing could be more mistaken," the station stressed. The broadcast said the time has come to realize that in its relations with the West since the end of World War II, Communism "has displayed all the tactics of its able and diabolical policy, but has not altered its ultimate aim: The subjugation and assimilation of all." British Plan More Aid For Catholic Schools Manchester, England. More state aid for Catholic schools is expected from the British government. Catholics at present are receiving a 50 per cent government grant toward the building of their schools, but under current conditions they face an estimated expenditure of in the next five years.

Bishop George A. Beck, A.A., of Salford, education spokesman for the British Bishops, said "that although the Education Minister Geoffrey Lloyd has not been able to concede all our requests and you may remember that the Bishops asked him for a flat grant of 75 per cent for all building he has discussed with us certain concessions which will certainly make our financial burden less." Moreau Seminary South Bend, Ind. Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, new Apostolic Delegate to the United States, will dedicate the new $3,000,000 Moreau Seminary on the Notre Dame University campus May 13. The facilities will accommodate 200 seminarians of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, as well as 30 faculty members, stu dent priests, and brothers. Newspaper Duty Ends St.

Louis. Monsignor (Maj. Gen.) Terrence P. Finnegan, chief of the U.S. Air Force chaplains, said that youths leave the service better Catholics than when they entered.

He thought it a terrible commentary on civilian life that 34 per cent of Catholics between the ages of 17 and 19 entering the Air Force receive the sacra ments once a year or less. He recommended pre-induction pro grams in parishes to prepare youths for service life. He warned that in this regard Prot estants are doing a better job and that all had best forget the false idea that the compulsory draft to military service is only temporary. Berlin's Mayor Calls For Reunified Nation Berlin. This city's Catholic mayor, Franz Amrehn, has de clared that the Berlin crisis can be solved only in connection with the reunification of Ger many.

Cautioning against giving in to Soviet pressure, Mayor Amrehn said it would be dangerous to agree to Russia's desire to discuss the Berlin question apart from a consideration of the German problem as a whole. Value of Love Shown With 9 Unadoptables London, Ont. In the past 15 years Dr. J.

F. Cooney, a' Toronto dentist, and his wife have adopted nine children who were diagnosed as "unadoptable" because of physical or emotional handicaps. Each handicap has been overcome. Dr. Cooney thinks the question of heredity should not greatly concern those wanting to adopt children.

He stresses the power of environment in the development of personality. He said that as each child was adopted, that child was able in some way to help the others to adjust. US0 Leaders Meet Among the St. Louis. A $46,000,000 de velopment program for the Jes uits' St.

Louis University has been launched by a council of 180 leading citizens headed by August A. Busch, Jr. The 10-year plan, described in a 12-page "Open Letter to St. Louis," includes an initial five- year campaign for $18,000,000 to take care of priority needs. Its completion in 1968 will coin cide with the university's 150th anniversary.

The long-range plan calls for an extension of the campus into the Mill, Creek area adjoining the present North Grand campus, significant additions td the university's Health Center, increased facilities for the Parks College of Aeronautical Technology in Cahokia, 111., faculty development, library additions, scholarships, and other facilities. Immediate needs in these areas include a 22.5-acre campus extension with a new institute of technology, a new science building for physics and the undergraduate teaching program in chemistry, a student citizenship center, and construction at Parks College. A total of $3,736,500 in priority funds will be spent on a psychiatric center, a dental research school, Cardinal Becomes Friars' Affiliate New York. Cardinal Spell-man received the simple brown garb of St. Francis and the breviary of the Order of Friars Minor to become an "adopted son" of the 750-year-old order.

The ceremony was witnessed by 1,200 persons in St. Anthony of Padua Church, where Father Charles J. Tallarico, Minister Provincial, read the document of affiliation that made Cardinal Spellman a full-fledged member of the order. The document was dated April 15 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Cardinal's being named Archbishop of New York.
