8M By WILLIAM EWALD NEW YORK teeth show sometimes called the NBC-TV summer Chevy Sunday night with all of its incisors, bicuspids, canines and molars Ordinarily, teeth' serve as instruments for the prehension and mastication of food, but on television they have an additional function: They are "proof of niceness. Furthermore, headlight- whiteness counts. It can be stated as a general rule that a TV performer who shows 32 teeth is twice as nice as one who only shows 16. The summer Chevy Show is a blinding essay in enamel. Janet Blair and John Raitt are Its hosts and they, of course, are both equipped with magnificent dental apparatus.

Movie Musical Manner Miss Blair dramatizes each of her songs In that peculiarly embarrassing manner of the 193040's movie musical heroine and Raitt approaches each number with the stiffness of a Buckingham guard on palace duty. But it doesn't keep that smile going. The content of material 'doesn't even matter. Sunday night, ior example, Raitt sang "The Battle of New Orleans" while four wtH- ly inappropriate chorus girls smiled four wildly inappropriate smiles while Raitt beamed one wildly inappropriate grin back. Gucste, of course, are booked into the summer Chevy Show on the strength of their teeth first and product second.

Dorothy Kirsten, a charming refugee from opera who can't sing a pop tune worth a darn, was mustered in Sunday night and grinned her way through. Everybody All Smiles Joe Bushkin, a pianist who is capable of fairly subtle jazz but who prefers to grind out cocktail piano kitsch on TV. was all smile Sunday night. So were three sublimely toothed singers, the Kim Sisters. And as final proof there is no greater key to the whole business than Burr Tillstrom's Kukla and Ollie puppets.

Ordinarily Kukla plays a fairly major part in each Tillstrom dialog. But not on Sunday night's summer Chevy Show where it was all Ollie the dragon. I can credit Ollie's preponderant role to only one has the great big gorgeous tooth going for him. 9 room house, 5 bedrooms, jus out of boro of Osceola Mills, lo taxes, acres of ground, high ele vation, gorgeous mountain seen ery, always a refreshing breeze summer. It's a show worth a look-in. NBC-TV's Perry Como closed dowii his season Saturday night with a charming show that, for a change, came over as genuinely casual.

It was dirty pool though to bill Teresa Brewer, Tony Bennett and The Four Lads as guests and then bring them on only for a walk-on in the closing minute. Dinrlbuled by K.nc WHAT HAS HAPPENED The adventure that led a youn American artist in Paris, Mar Travers, to the most challenging an desirable woman he bad ever encountered began when his best frleni Philippe Langle. was murdered.

Philippe, a French diplomat work ing to effect peace in Algeria, wa. assassinated while he was endeavor ing to meet Timgad. an undergroun leader of Algerian rebels. Philippe' dying words were "Find Timgad Mark. Promise." Mark got nowhere in his searcf for Timgad until Corinno Javal.

on of the women in Philippe's life, sai that Timgad had been seen in Mont Carlo. Mark flew to Monte Carlo, an immediately received a threatenin note: "Unless you stop interfering i matters which are none of your con cern. you will not survive." Mark had reason to believe tha only two persons knew of his com ing to Monte Ferric of the Surete and Corinne Java Could Corinne have put him on th spot? He was pondering that an awaiting a planned rendezvous wit Corinne at 10 when he en countered a lovely ballerina. Fleur Constant, on a beach. Forgetful of his date with Corinn and his danger, he asked Fleur have lunch with him before they parted.

The thought of her stirre Mark's memory of Guy Constant, th deep-sea explorer, whom he assumes to be her brother. Seeking to soo Flcur to explain breaking their luncheon date, Marl went to call on Guy Constant. CHAPTER 6 I NLY a few years older than thought Mark. Thirty Thirty-two, perhaps. He stepped forward to introduce himself to Fleur's brother.

"I am honored, Mr. Travers," Guy Constant acknowledged. Like Fleur, his body was excellently proportioned but his face did not resemble hers in any way It was a long, narrow face that even when smiling, looked harsh Where the shape of her mouth betrayed generosity, his was set in a thin, almost bloodless line His noso was slightly crooked and a little too large, and his dark eyes had a faraway, inward look. "I didn't know I was so famous, or that anybody cared." Mark returned the smile, "You don't really mean that." "But I do. And it Isn't modesty.

If you want to know the truth, it's bitterness." His voice was melodious and, like Fleur's, very soft "The public reads my books, yes, they come to my lectures, yes, but when I make a plea for the money which is so badly need ed to expand my work, then, all of a sudden, they are no longer interested. They'd much rather buy themselves some snorkels and fins and do their own diving. They think more of the sport than of the science. And without my motion, pictures, I assure you, they would neither buy my books nor pay to hear me lecture." "I wonder," said Mark, "if you are right. I should think but Guy Constant apparently never let the other finish, "I'll be delighted to give you an interview," he said, "but not today.

I'm in the middle of a chapter. How about tomorrow? Because on Monday I have to be in Marseilles." Mark realized that he had to give up all hope of seeing Fleu now, for Guy Constant was a ready ushering him past th group of old women as thoug they didn't exist, and hurryin hiiia down the crude steps of th flowered terrace. But once the had reached Mark's car, he apolo gized. "Forgive me for not introduc ing you, but I wanted to sav them the embarrassment of no being properly dressed. Yes, in deed." He laughed with gentl mockery.

"All has to be ver proper, very formal. Maybe yo have heard that my grandmothe was a Spanish aristocrat who ere ated quite a scandal in her tim by marrying a simple Mr. Con stant Well, they can't forget th past, or won't But then, it's al they have. One must bj tolerant. It seemed to be a family trai to be very frank when it cam to airing grievances.

"Besides, said Guy Constant, and now his apologetic smile made him re semble Fleur, "they are all violently anti-American, for th simple reason that, for years, we have had to rent the big house to Americans to make both ends meet. So don't mind anything they may or may not say th next time you come. You canv through the park, didn't you? Well, the other way is quicker When did you say you'd come?" "Whenever is most convenient to you." "Three o'clock tomorrow afternoon." "Fine. See you then." Driving off, Mark glanced at the clock on the dashboard. Five to ten.

He would be ate. At least twenty minutes late. Surprise made him frown sharply. How could he have riskec icing late in a situation like this when the time element might be of the utmost importance? He knew only too well Because, like a high-school boy, le had let himself be attracted a girl. Because she had set his Imagination spinning, he had lost aluable time, He braked sharply.

Having no attention to where he vas going, he had nearly passed he sharp curve that cut from he Moyenne-Corniche in the toute de la Turbie. Looking down his righj, he saw the medieval rtllage of Koquebrunc. with its anious castle, and recalled his enchantment when he had first rtsited it His eyes wandered. To the eaat lay the Italian borer. Genoa, he Rome.

He had always wanted to spend year in Rome. Would Fleur ke Rome? He caught himself sharply. A'hat was the matter with him hat he included her in his plans, girl be hardly knew? Again saw her face, suddenly seri- us, resignation clouding her eyes. She had to be encouraged to rcak away from her hat an odd lot they ve her own life. Well, how was he going to do if he dicln find Timgad He would not be free man until he had done his small share in the fight against the terror that had killed his father, and had fulfilled his promise to Philippe.

He drove as fast as he coul 1 up the Mont Agel. Here the cour try was barren. Nothing but rub ble and scree on cither aide of the narrow road which led in hairpin bends up to the golf course, Monaco's radio station and the fort where the Germans had entrenched themselves during the war. There were hardly any houses. Why had Corinne Javal chosen the links as the spot to meet him? He could hear her sultry voice as he had heard it yesterday over the telephone.

"You'll be surprised to know that I've taken up golf again, seriously. One meets such amusing people. I'll introduce you to one of them. And I like the view from the clubhouse, On a clear day you can see the Alps, all covered with snow. Yes, I play regularly, every day at ten o'clock.

It's healthier and less expensive than gambling. You'd better come before my new friend leaves." Another steep curve, Mark shifted into first gear, drove around the bend and was waved to a stop by a policeman. "Sorry, sir, there's been an accident. You can't pass until the photographers are through taking pictures." There was quite a group of 011- policemen, a girl with two mules, a couple of soldiers, caddies from the golf links, although they were a mile away, leople who had been stopped, like )im, men and women in sports clothes, three boys, obviously German, wearing leather shorts, oaded with heavy knapsacks and an assortment of cameras, and a couple of Italians on a motor- jycle. One was a small, fat man; the other was thin, tall, with jlecpy eyes, A cigarette dangled rom his lips.

As he pushed past him, Mark could smell the man's sickeningly sweet hair lotion. It's a wonder the car came to a halt at all," somebody was say- hg. A bright red Jaguar blocked be road, its nose rammed into lie mountain. Half-hanging over he low door, her head dangling, er face almost hidden by htr silvery hair, lay a woman. Knot- ed around her neck was a long lue scarf.

Mark's throat went y. "What happened?" "They say her scarf strangled er," one of the soldiers an- wered. "The end must have aught in the wheel, see?" He pointed to the left back 'heel. A piece of Corinne's scarf wound tightly around one of le spokes. Its torn end hung limp.
