'THREE LIVELY ARTS' More Music, Less Dance Would Improve Program By IvaeHELINE KEATING Citizen Drama Critic "An evening With the Three Lively Arts," presented over the weekend at the Jewish Community Center, was a mildly diverting combination of dance, the speaking voice and music.

There was too much of the first, just enough of the second and not enough of the third in a program of divertissements that took less than an hour and a half to perform. It was intime in the manner of after dinner entertainment at the turn of the century, when homes were large enough for that sort of thing, and dear to the heart of Jacquie Kennedy when she was living at the White House. Although it smacked of pretentiousness in an inoffensive way, the program made for a pleasant enough evening. The 'Passersby 5 Held In Burglary ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Police answering a burglary call to an establishment found two men who said they were passersby who called officers a hearing the burglary alarm.

Officers arrested a Deats, 31, and Carlos G. Perez, 26, both of Albuquerque, and charged them with aggravated burglary. Police said the establishment's alarm can be heard only at the alarm company's central office. 81-Year-OM Retires To Care For Mother SEATTLE (ft Lillian Atwood is retiring from Goodwill Industries to take care of her mother. The Millay drama, playing upon the effect of greed and ambition on friendship, was exceedingly well done. Staged against an on-stage musical accompaniment by a harpist and two flutists and combining poet- i rama and commedia deli'arfe, with a dance interlude inserted for good measure, the Millay piece was decidedly effective.

The musical trio of Patricia Adams on harp, Gerard Irwin and Althia Levine, flutists, added immeasureably to the overall harmony of the production. Tn fact, a whole evening of their nusic would be a delight to listen to. In the roles of two young she- SATURDAY'S ANSWER 37 66 pherds, who find worldly desires complicating i pastoral friendship, Gary Timbernard and Steve Rosenthal gave sensitively serious interpretations, with exceptional feeling and understanding of the thought behind the lines. As Columbine and Pierrot, Linda and Jerry Newman, played with light-hearted abandon that provided balance and a happy, contrast to the more somber mood of the shepherds. Among the "Fragments" of the firs': portion of the program, a scene from Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar," with Sandy Rosenthal playing Cassius and Ed Oresman as Brutus, was a standout.

The heady prose was spoken with a quiet intensity that fleshed the scene with vivid life. A dance number, "5 Minutes and 22 Seconds," so titled because it took that much time to perform, was amusingly stylized and humorous as done by Judy Abbott, Marcia Blute, Dale Dunn, Cheryl Folkins, Gloria Hirsch and Howard Frederick. The other three numbers, combining poetry and dance, I thought fell considerably short of their intention. The contemporary dances, although well enough done in themselves, did not succeed in either complementing or interpreting the poetry. Rather they seemed too dynamic for the gossamer threads of the poems.

Sandy Rosenthal was drama director, Frances Smith Cohen, dance director and Robert Rudolph, music director, for the Performing Arts Committee of the Tucson Jewish Community Center.
