The only iron men In 'football today are those 15 corn-fed lowans.

They've earned that honor. Let them keep it alone. Win is just a 60-rninute man, a guy who plays a full game just about every tune ha pulls on his football suit. Like other linemen, who incidentally were the big stars when you look back at the present season, Pedersen hasn't been in the headlines a great deal. But you'll have to look around to find any Gopher who has played any more football than he has, both in quantity and quality.

Last year the Gopher captain played 420 ot the 480-tninuU Gopher season, total of seven full games. This year he has been in there four complete games and 40, 88 and minutes in the other three. And that by a fellow who was called a sissy in high school because he delayed going out for football. to shade Wester State Teachers, 7-6, at Detroit; and John Carroll i i 1 rode to a 25-6 triumph over Akron university at Akrpn. Vi lt ill -it--. You see, Pedersen didn't go out for footDall at West high until he was a senior. In his first attempt he made the all-city team, which proved to all of his critics that he was anything but a sissy. i- Pedersen's career at the university is a story of hard work and a long pull. He went out for the freshman team and made the squad.

Next he spent a year with the Bombers. Then he made the varsity as a reserve. But it wasn't until last year that he jumped into the first string line to stay, To illustrate Pedersen's value in the Gopher line, let's recall this year's Purdue game. Minnesota was leading, 13-6, with a few minutes to play. Pedersen, whose defensive play had thwarted the Purdue thrusts at nearly every turn, suffered a leg Injury and was taken out of the game.

On the next play Bylene ran over his position for the touchdown which tied the game. Yes, fie has been a mighty valuable man to have around and his reward may be a bid to play in the East-West game at San Francisco New Year's day. Pedersen has had the misfortune of being captain of a Minnesota team which Is suffering one of the school's worst seasons in the win and loss column. That may be a bit heartbreaking. Saturday big games will be played in Philadelphia and South Bend.

In Philadelphia, it's unbeaten Cornell against Pennsylvania in one of the east's traditional games. Cornell is favored to close out an all-conquering season but this is one of those games that produces an upset more times than it runs true to form. And let's not forget what is more important than that he is the key cog in one of the best Gopher lines the Big Ten has had in many seasons. No one has made much ground THROUGH them.
