Ctaa uio perxwet nvnem wwrwwu, uu within reasonable distance from the hydrants, established felt quite safe from the dangers of conflagration. The force and Tolome of water which could be obtained at a'moment's notice secured the subjugation of many fires, which, with ordinary methods of extinguishment, might hare burned unchecked.

The location of the Pomp house is such that the supply of water must be drawn from the canal which supplies the Floor and Paper and Woolen Mills at the Falls. Three or four times a year the water is entirely let oat of this canal for the purpose of cleaning it. and not turned in again for aeTeral days. This, of coarse left the water pomps wtthont power, and has caused periods of dangerous exposure to the perils of fire. To avoid this a change in the location of the Pump-house was necessary, and last year the city' purchased of Mr.

Bassett his atone building on the dam for this object. It would have been a work of weeks to remove the machinery from the old to the new building, during which time the city would have no safeguard whatever against lire; so it waa decided in the Council to order new machinery to be built and placed in the new building before removing the old. The city had grown so rapidly, too, in four years that there was really need for additional pomps and for a great extension of the water mains. Lea Hardenberg, of the Minnesota Iron "Works, contracted to bniid all the machinery required, their price being something over S15.0CO. Mr.

Jas. Waters, who is in charge of tha i City Water Works, offered designs of improved pomps of his own device, which ware accepted. The Holly pumps are rotary in action; those of Mr. Waters' invention are doable-acting piston pumps. The latter is far more durable than a rotary pomp, which wears oat very fast.

No stand-pipe or reservoir is required for as the water is pumped directly from the River into the main. 'It was claimed ihat the Holly engines would throw 1,300 callous of water par mifiole Mr. Waters claims for his a discharging capacity of about 1,500 gallons per minnte, or, in round numbers, 3,000.000 gallons per day. The machinery is now being placed in position in the new city water-works building, and will not be in complete running order before the middle of July. We hare felt interested in the progress of the work, and thinking that others, who have the growth and prosperity of Minneapolis equall at heart, will be alike interested in the matter we have interviewed the new pumps "from turret to nnibniunn nyutfUi HinneaDolia.

Leading into this tunnel there is a pit, in which are placed two American Turbine water wheels of 175 horse-power each. This pit oval in shape, 12 feet by 18 feet in dimensions, being lined with a brick wall in cement 1 feet thick. Half way down the pit are the wheels, which rest on 4 wrought-irou channel bars and these bars are upheld by entering tne side of the rock, with the additional support of brick arches.

On one side of the pit is the flume for supplying water to the wheels. The dimensions of this are 4 feet by 18 leet, and it ia sufficiently high to prevent floods from coming into the building. From the flame the water is carried by two massive iron pipes, each five feet in diameter, on tbe lower ends of which aie heavy cast iron gates, whereby the water can be shot off from either wheel. At the upper ends ot these pipes are two large bulkhead gates, by means of which the water can be kept out of the flume. Fran the wheels the power is applied by perpendicular shafts running through the pipea and connecting with a line of horizontal ahafting.
