Rains Make Road to Grafton Deep for Motorists 'The touring bureau of the Alton Auto Club has issued a bulletin indicating that the best and. in event of, wet weather, only way to reach Grafton at the present time te over the Alton and Eastern Rallroad. Motorists are being warned by the touring bureau that the road between Route 3 and Grafton is next to impassable. Detours through field and up and down steep and rocky hills compose the going, and Grafton peopie bave appealed to the club for cooperation and assistance on plans to make the route to Grafton by way of the Missouri side of the. river and the, Grafton ferry an all-weather road.

By using the route along the Mis. sourl side of the Mississippi to Grafton, the bad although necessary detours of the Illinois side route may be avoided. But there is bad stretch of gumbo and mud for distance of 1000 feet leading to the ferry on the Missouri side which nt present offers as much trouble for motorists as the detours made necessary by the Illinois paving program. There is hope, however, that the stretch of road to the ferry landing opposite Grafton may soon be improved with stone. Funds are being raised to provide for the improvement.

A conference was held last Saturday at St. Charles, in the matter, and officers of the Alton Auto Club forsee success of the project. the 1000 road to the ferry can be improved, compiete graveled connection, with Missouri Route 94. to Grafton from Alton is but a trifle longer through Missouri than through Illinois. The Theaters At The Grand The speaking screen Is seeing significant development as the motion picture and stage are brought still closer together through a merging of their respective technique. One fully expects to find extraordinary contributions to the new art of the "talkies," but one does not always expect to find such a totally new note in entertainment as that afforded by the Fox Movietone production, "Hearts in Dixie." this' the all-talking Grand picture Theater and an yesterday allainging, all-dancing production it might be termed, also- -was given its local premiere before an audience which, before the final song, was CXpressing its enthusiasm with prolonged applause. While, after all is said and done, "Hearts in Dixie" may be termed properly a comedy suggesting at times a revue, it rises to such grandeur through the use of folk songs and spirituals that at times one is tempted to compare it to grand opera. A chorus of sixty volces presents in nothing less than a 'sublime manner the moving songs of the region people were known for their proneness to sing even though they were. hungry.

The ensemble reaches points where it has the majesty and soul-shaking power of a great Organ. Again, it has all the lightheartedness and humor of children at play. All of which is saying that "Hearts in Dixie" is a novelty which has no precedent. At the Hippodrome In "Saturday's Children," which began its local showing at the podrome yesterday, Corinne Griffith, with her superb beauty and, ability, touches entirely new hights In her line interpretation of Bobby Halvey, a working girl, with very modern Ideas on the subject of matrimony. "Saturday's Children" is a domest1c story of the more Intimate type, which depends for its interest and entertalnment on its human qualities, Its realism and deep feeling.

It deals with the disconcerting honesty of young men and women in love today. In the hands of a less capable actress, the role of Bobby, an every day character, distinguished chlefly by an intelligence superior to her class and surroundings and her fearlessness in carrying out her own convictions, however unconventional, cording to the world's standards, might have seemed rather commonplace; but Miss Griffith has succeeded in portraying the charm and whimsicality, the courage and tremendous human quality of the character. In making himself responsible for $210,000 Ruppert, In the fashion of a good business man, figured on the profits that would accrue from exhibition games. And in the contracts for those exhibition games it was stipulated always that the Babe must play.

So if the Babe doesn't appear in exhibition games in the future the Yankees will be no more of an attraction for side money than any other first division club In either league. And May Get Less Dough It is a tough break for any man to get down under physical disability, but it is more than a tough break for the Babe. But he hasn't much of a kick coming if he has to take big. salary slice when he comes to the signing of a new contract next winter. It his services are available for only a part of the season and if the Yankees lose the pennant, the Babe will not have strong argun.ents to present for one-year contract at $100,000, which he 1s said to have in mind.

The Doctor Bluffing? Thero is story going around among the ball players that the doctor was throwing a scare into Babe 'when told him about the bad heart. And also that the Yank.ees wanted an excuse to keep him out of the early season on games so that he would be in condition to make a strong finish in the late season drive. It WAS the general opinion of the ball players during the spring season that the Babe could not play 164 games in the Ruth style. And the records of recent seasons provided justification for the opinion. He finished the senson on one leg last year and it was only his tremendous courage and his great liking the game that enabled him to help the Yankees out in their emergency and mako the magnificent display that he made in the world sertes.

In making his protest about playing in the exhibition games the Babe complained that one exhibition game took more out of hum than a dozen regular games. He said he was mauled and pushed around the grounds and that he always had the fear in a crowd of young boys that he would spike some of them. He said that on several occasions hie spiked himself trying to keep his feet oft the kids who were swarming about him.
