From The Scientific American. The co npletion of Kmonr'a 4 Amrican Mechanical Dictionary" is an event in the annals of literature in this country, as it marks the substantial completion of a gret and ehilioiate undet taking, the labor on wh oh has ext -nded over a period of eight years. It is to real how colossal is the tak involve! in the pre' Miration of a work of this description. Thousands ot patents, American and foreign, hUve been digested, industrial processes of every nature have leen examined, and the latest improvements therein noted. Engineering works, scientific discoveries, and tools of every craft have been titndierf aud finally all this immense collection, gathered from the whole field of applied science, has been snbjerted to careful revision and condensation, and, by means of ingeniously contrived systems of indexing, rendered invaluable for purposes of reference and research.

Add to this the labors of artist and engraver and there is little food for marvel that the work has cost that it treats of 20,000 subjects; contains 7,400 engravings, and that its three volumes include 2,00 pages. It is more an encyclopaedia than a dictionary it is, in fact a mechanical and scientific library, carried up to the latest dates. A just estimate of the comprehensive nature of the work, and its importance to inventors, enginesrs, and artisans of every class and in all libraries, can only be gained by careful examination of the volumes themselves.
