TUESDAY. APRIL 5. 1938 Minneapolis stail THIRTEEN 518,000 BIRTHDAY- Jane Withers Have Airplane Par ien uz it it it it it i XT Separate compartments for each doll are being built in the wall, with backdrops painted in to show their native lands. This room alone costs $2,500. At the other end will be a puppet theater, also 13 by 20.

In the center will be an open "ship deck." Jane's birthday comes just 11 days before Shirley Temple is nine. Those two birthdays In one month means tremendously heavy work at the studio. Since Shirley rates No. 1 at the boxoffice there will be thousands of presents, from every corner of the globe. Christmas presents still are coming in for both of them.

Shirley has done some musical scoring which her teacher proudly shows. Just like any other little girl, Shirley beams at the praise. But you can't get a boastful word at any time from this little star. "I hope I play pretty well," is as far as she will go, And that's major credit, too, for Mama Temple and Tapa Temple who have 100.000 people ready and willing to tell them how they should bring up Shirley. Fact is, there Isn't a more natural or better mannered child in this town or a good many other towns, for that matter.

By 5ULTOX HARKER HOLLYWOOD (INS) First movie star to go up in the air on her birthday, Jane Withers, just 12 on April 12, will hold her party in a giant 21-passenger transport plane. It will be an $18,000 birthday for the nation's sixth ranking screen star. Jane and her little guests won't get as far off the ground as she would like to go. Her mother, Mrs. Ruth Withers, decreed that most of the time the plane would just taxi around Grand Central airport at nearby Glendale.

The Withers' last experience with Jane in mechanical equipment almost proved disastrous. A friend gave Jane a little racing car with a real motor. Her father built her a banked track in the back yard, but evidently it wasn't banked properly. A few days after Jane learned to run the car, she got going at a good clip, ran off the track, almost hit her mother and finally took down 20 feet of fence. Then they gave the car to a friend.

The niftiest thing about Mrs. Withers and Janie is they both Won't Get Far Off Ground make every effort to get parts for those little girls who were generous to Jane when they were up and she was only an extra at $5 to $7.50 a day. From her parents Jane will receive as a birthday present a two-story play building, 78 feet long, and a swimming pool, 25 by 50, now under construction on the Withers four-acre Westwood park estate. In revealing the most elaborate birthday present in filmdom's history, Mrs. Withers said she and Mr.

Withers had a very definite motive, which "isn't to spoil Janie." "We want Janie always to have her fun at home," said Mother Withers. "We want her to bring her friends home." On the lower floor of the new play building will be a play room and showers and dressing quarters for boys and girls. At one end of the second floor will be a room, 15 by 28 feet, which will house the 700 dolls sent Janie by admirers in every quarter of the globe.
