The historic convention facility was retrofitted in 1997 as a soundstage where Jonathan Demme filmed Beloved, starring Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover, last year, Sixth Sense will also film at city locations, including Head House Square, the Rittenhouse Square area, the Striped Bass restaurant on Walnut Street, and Broad Street near City Hall, familiar to Willis, who shot scenes for 12 Monkeys in the shadow of Billy Penn. According to residents of the Fair-mount section, who received a notice from the production company, the 2000 block of Mount Vernon Street will be a location on Sept. 28 between 6 and 10 a.m. Those familiar with the production schedule say that most of the movie will be made in Philadelphia, but that a private residence in Blue Bell will be the site of some important scenes.

Disney's media blackout on the project is a rerun of the famously controlling studio's modus operandi during the making of Beloved. Sixth Sense's economic boost to the city "will be in the $8 million range," estimates Sharon Pinken-son, executive director of the Film Office. This figure is reckoned by computing the cost of hotel room nights, salaries for local actors and technicians (including city wage taxes), and vendors including Bell Atlantic Mobil, Teague Lumber and Wissahickon Spring Water, as well as carpenters and caterers. Pinkenson's role is to bring film and TV productions to the region.

Her job was made easier in that this project conceived by Shyamalan (pronounced SHAH-ma-lawn), a graduate of Episcopal Academy who lives in Conshohocken was written specifically with the city as a backdrop. The writer-director, 28, made Praying With Anger (1993) after completing his studies at New York University. His 1998 film Wide Awake, about a 10-year-old Main Line boy who literally and figuratively finds God, was shot in and around Philadelphia. In November, the filmmaker's original script for The Sixth Sense was the subject of a fevered bidding war that topped out at $3.1 million, believed to be the highest figure paid for an uncommissioned screenplay. Almost as unprecedented, his script was immediately a "go" project meaning that it required no further development and was immediately put into production.

He lives in Conshohocken. many local actors have been hired for the film, though one familiar with the casting details confirms "lots, in smaller roles."
