Anerson Piano 79 8th st a PLAN TO CHANGE STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM UPHELD Electricity to Replace Present Gas Lamps Will Mean Saving, Claim Voicing a strong defense of the plan substitute electricity for gas in lighting Minneapolis streets, Alderman Eugene Hanscom, chairman of the city council committee on lighting, today made public a statement, contradicting assertions of Mayor George E.

Leach, who, on urday, attacked eliminating of the gas lamps as a menace to the city and calculated to increase the "unregulated control" of the Minneapolis General Electric company Minneapolis illamination. Saving to City Seen Alderman Hanscom bases his detense primarily on the accepted fact that replacement of the 3,300 gas lights by about 550 incandescents will save the city $56,137 a year. He also contends that the 500 electric lights will furnish four the illumination obtained from the entire battery of gas lamps. The man's statement reads, in part, as follows: "There has, according to newspaper reports, been an attack made upon the city committee council and public especially lighting the standing, on mayor due to its action in substituting electricity for gas in street illumination that if left unanswered might create a great amount of bad feeling and misunderstanding. Question of Economy "Some of the statements have no foundation in fact.

In the first place, there are only two sources at present where the city can purchase the essary street illumination. One is from the gas light company and the other from the General Electric company. The next question is what is the best and most economical to use? "At present we have 3,300 gas lights which cost $27 each a year and means a $138.50 per block, or a total of $89,100. The cost of the 1,000 candie power type incandescent is $59.50 each, making a total for 554 lamps of $32,963, an annual saving of $56,137. In addition, we get a reduction of 50 cents each on 4,120 arc lights, which amounts to $2,060, making a total saving of $58,197.

Better Light "There are gas lights per block on an average to our streets, which have 40 candle power each, which makes 220 candle power per block, and we are substituting 1,000 candle power for this, or more than four times the amount of illumination. "The projection of light from the incandescent is much greater than from the present are light. Now the incandescents are not fed as stated by dangerous high power overhead wires, but by the same wires and the same voltage that now furnishes electricity for the private residences. The latter have been our streets for many years. Why the on, sudden discovery that they are dangerous? FOUR DEAD SENT TO HOME TOWN Victims of Crossing Accident Removed After Coroner's Inquest Lake City, Nov.

bodies of Edward Winter, his wife and her two sisters, Ruth and Violet Anderson, were taken to Le Sueur today for burial, following a coroner's inquest into the quadruple tragedy at "Dead Man's Crossing" two miles west of here.
