Valley Song (People's Light Theatre Co.C Athol Fugard's play concerns a girl determined to leave her rural South African village and the grandfather who raised her ttf seek a singing career in the big city.

The metaphorical use of the situation as a symbsl for Ihe new South Africa is problematical, but" Lisa Renee Pitts offers an appealing performance as the enthusiastic, optimistic Veronica. Gridlock'd Actor-turned-writerdirector Vondie Curtis Hall's tense and intense comedy about unkies trying to go straight. Drugs may be no laughing mailer, but Tim Rolh and the late Tupac Shakur are drolly tunny as two Detroit musicians who come to realize that getting clean is dirty work.

Microcosmos A wide-eyed documentary that zooms in on the world of insects with high-powered lenses and a spirit of playful rapture; it's nothing more than 75 minutes of amazing close-ups of assorted arachnids and arthropods doing what arachnids and arthropods do somewhere in a field in France. Mother Albert Brooks' drolly serious comedy about a twice-divorced writer who returns to the home of his mother in order to resolve his conflicted feelings about the woman who defined his relations to women. The wistful Brooks plays the son and Debbie Reynolds the mother of all mothers. 1 hr. 43 PC-13 C.R. Shine The true story compelling and mostly devoid of manipulation of David Helfgott, the Australian pianist who went from child prodigy to the depths of mental despair.

To March 9. (Not reviewed). The Countess Cathleen (Arden Theatre Company). Transplanting William Butler Yeats' 1892 The Countess Cathleen to the American South after the Civil War, director Ozzie Jones neither transforms nor elucidates his source. Instead, he outfits the Irish verse play in a flashy, ill-fitting suit, attempting to make a visceral experience of an essentially aural one.

To next Sunday. C.A.R. The Homecoming (Hedgerow Theatre). Lacking a menacing, edgy atmosphere, this production of Harold Pinter's dark, puzzling play about a bizarre family has the feel of a satirical comedy. It plays too lightly, and the audience laughs a bit too fully at its edgy, nasty humor.

To Saturday. D.J.K. Laughter on the 23rd Floor (Walnut Street Theatre). Neil Simon's play, about a group of comedy writers surrounding a Sid Caesar-like TV star, aims strictly for laughs. There are lots to be had in this production, directed by and starring Frank Ferrante.

To next Sunday. D.J.K. The Old Settler (McCarter Theatre, Princeton). John Henry Redwood's bittersweet comedy, which deals with the May-September romance of an unmarried, middle-aged woman (an "old and a young man in 1943 Harlem, is a real discovery These recent films are among thos being released this week for video-Z rental or purchase. House Arrest A headache of a movie with a.

Parent Trap premise that quickly devolves mt clamorous fared, about kids holding their moms-and dads hostage until they work out their marital difficulties. Heart-warmingly funny and pitch-black and frightening, this is a fully realized portrait of a strange, gentle character and his search for redemption. 2 hr. 14 (violence, profanity, adult themes) S.R Special Effects Anything Can Happen Fascinating Imax documentary that goes behind the scenes to show how science and imagination meet on the big screen. Independence Day and other pics old and new are shown, with detailed explanations of how Hollywood's deftest screen illusions have been achieved. 40 minutes. No MPAA rating (vertiginous aerial shots) S.R. Star Trek: First Contact In a splendid directing debut from Jonathan Frakes. who does double duty as Cmdr.

Riker, Capt. Jean-Luc Picard's crew takes on the time-traveling Borg, which is bent on altering human history. This is first-rate science-fiction filmmaking that finally liberates the Enterprise from the storied old crew that has peopled all seven previous movies in the series. 1 hr. 50 PG-13 (violence) D.R.

arrives in town with dire warnings about lava and quakes, and then gets to play Mr. I-Told-You-So when his prophecies turn true. Linda Hamilton is the mayor, the special effects are cheesy, and the suspense is utterly lacking. 1 hr. 52 PG-13 (dead squirrels, screaming hordes, children in jeopardy) S.R.

Evita Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical finally makes it from Broadway to the big screen as a literal costume drama tailored as a star vehicle for Madonna and her many-colored outfits. Bold, boisterous, big on spectacle and persuasively sung, Alan Parker's film on the lite and death ot Eva Peron can't surmount the inherent difficulties of the political material or make you cry for its heroine, let alone Argentina. 2 hr. 14 PG (minor violence) D.R. Jerry Maguire A hip and on-the-money romantic comedy that stars Tom Cruise as a sports superagent who experiences a moment of honest self-appraisal a suicidal move in his huckstering profession.

Cruise has traveled the filmic hustler's path to redemption many times, but the glitzy sleaze of modern sports gives this journey new life. The performances are first-rate. 2 hr. 18 PG-13 (profanity, nudity) D.R. Michael John Travolta as an arch archangel, a beer-swilling, chain-smoking debauchee whose mission is to restore cynical journalists William Hurt and Andie MacDowell their hearts.
