i THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, SUNDAY MORNING. JANUARY 29. 191 'Money, Money, Money9 American Exchange Has a Signal System All Its Own Third of six Sunday article excerpted from "Money, Money, Money," a fascinating story of the mechanics that make up the workings of Wall Street. Three additional excerpts from this book will appear in the financial pages on the next three Sundays. Bt RALPH G.

MARTIN AND MORTON D. STONE WHO would ever imagine that a staid stockbroker would wear rainbow-spat tered patches on his clothes or a green derby or a striped oversize cap and buy and sell his stocks in the open cobblestoned street, using a manhole cover or a mailbox or a lamppole as a trading post? And mingling with a crowd of tourists and peddlers, try to catch the eye of his clerk who is sitting on a second-story window sill, his legs dangling outside? Yet that's the way it was with the American Stock Exchange at the turn of the century when it was better known as "The Curb." It was a time when upstairs firms on The Street sublet an office window to a rival firm, or else built platforms in the windows, renting out either the top or bottom half. And outside the brokers worked in rain, shine, sleet, or snow (they were so weathered by outside winter that when the Exchange finally moved indoors in 1921, its membership, un used to Indoor heating, had a record number of illnesses). Then it grew In jumps tickers operating In more than 300 cities in the United States and Canada. In 1959 more than shares changed hands on its trading floor.

And yet, the quick tourist question on The Street is: Who needs it? If you've got the New York Stock Exchange, why do need this one? There are many answers, many differences. ASE puts more emphasis on a company's growth potential rather than its earnings when it accepts it for listing; ASE puts stronger stress on foreign stock; ASE serves as springboard for those companies not big enough for the Big Board; ASE trades a large number of unlisted securities. But, on the other hand, about half of ASE common stocks have dividend records from 10 to 112 consecutive years. The whole tone here is different from the Big Board. It look different, feels different, sounds different.

The Big Board spills into several rooms; ASE effectively packs into one huge room with a columnless 63-foot ceiling, more than 20,000 square feet with 21 octagon-shaped trading posts instead of NYSE's 19 horseshoes. But the main physical difference is seven steeply rising tiers of telephone desks for broker clerks on the east and west walls, which keep the clerks off the trading floor. The ASE clerk uses a simple way to contact his broker: He yells at him. "I don't care how noisy th room is," said William Earle, "and it doesn't matter" how many other guys are -yelling, but as soon as my'v clerk yells, I recognize it lm- mediatelv. When I used to sell bonds years ago, I had 18 phones on my desk and when one of them rang, I.

Now ASE has almost a thousand regular and associate members having more than 2,500 offices in 630 cities in 49 States serviced by more than 1600 28 mv vfr.rOL jwtfJ -t The Week in Review Sfcigftv ffiaritasp TtonSBm (tar fflcwfl, I Salea In Net l-ltoMI- -1440-41- Salet In Net 100'.
