B6 City THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Wednesday, December 11, 1996 Obituaries Singer Faron Young, 64, country star By Jim Patterson ASSOCIATED PRESS NASHVILLE Faron Young, 64, a country singer whose string of hits included the classic Willie Nelson song "Hello Walls," died yesterday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died at Columbia Summit Medical Center, said Melanie Lamb, hospital spokeswoman. A suicide note was discovered with him Monday when a friend found him at his home, wounded. The note detailed Mr. Young's plans to kill himself, police said.

Mr. Young, whose hits also included "Sweet Dreams," "It's Four in the Morning" and "Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young," had been depressed recently about health problems, friends said. He had emphysema and recently underwent prostate surgery, said his lawyer, Grant Smith. Donald Reeves a neighbor, said the performer "wasn't his same old exuberant self" the last three months. Besides a series of hits on the country charts from the '50s onward, Mr.

Young was a successful businessman and occasional movie actor. He founded and later sold the country-music fan magazine Music City News. His nickname, the Singing Sheriff, came from a role he played in the movie Hidden Guns. Among his other films were Raiders of Old California and Daniel Boone. Mr.

Young was known for aiding the careers of younger artists and songwriters. He recorded the songs of Nelson, Don Gibson and Bill Anderson early on, and Kris Kristofferson earned rent money working as a laborer for Mr. Young. Nelson's "Hello Walls" was a No. 1 country hit in 1961 and made it into the top 20 on the pop charts.

In 1974, Mr. Young recorded his last major country hit, "Some Kind of Mr. Young, who divorced about 15 years ago, is survived by four children. All were with their father when he died. J.

Quinlan, 71; advocated right to die ASSOCIATED PRESS Faron Young in a 1979 photograph. Joseph T. Quinlan, 71, a quietly devout man whose legal crusade to allow his daughter Karen Ann to "die with dignity" thrust him into the national spotlight, died Saturday at his home in Wantage, N.J. Mr. Quinlan, who had cancer, will be buried today at his daughter's side.

Mr. Quinlan's care was supervised by the Karen Ann Quinlan Center of Hope, the hospice that he and his wife, Julia, had helped start with proceeds from a book and TV movie. Karen Ann Quinlan was 21 when she slipped into a coma at a party in 1975. Although the cause was never established, others at the party said she had drunk several gin-and-tonics on top of a mild tranquilizer. The Quinlans, convinced that Karen Ann's condition would not improve, requested that her respirator be turned off.

When doctors at St. Clare's Hospital refused, the family filed a legal challenge. The case reached the state Supreme Court, which ruled in support of the Quinlans in March 1976. The decision opened a nationwide debate over the choices families increasingly face over the use of extraordinary measures to prolong life. As it turned out, Karen Ann Quinlan lived for more than nine years after she was removed from the respirator in May 1976.

Her father visited her daily at a nursing home in Morris Plains. Meanwhile, Mr. Quinlan assumed an activist role in two related causes: the etiort to enact unitorm and humane right-to-die laws, and the promotion of hospice care, which allows terminally ill patients to spend their final days at home in the company of loved ones. One of his final acts was to approve a legal brief for the New Jersey Medical Society opposing physician-assisted suicide. Death Notices ABRAHAM Dec.
