"A lot of kids just stayed away from the type of events you normally enjoy in high school." "There was a handful of excellent teachers, and some not-so-excellent teachers," she said.

"I would have preferred a more ambitious, demanding environment." Losing Woodland's students would be a financial loss for the Pemberton Township School District, which as a special-needs district already qualifies for additional state dollars. With the transfer of the Woodland students, the high school would lose about $300,000. About 1,350 students attend Pemberton Township High School. Fifty-five percent of its graduates go on to two- or four-year colleges. Within the Lenape system's three high schools, the percentage of students who go on to college is considerably higher, with no school falling below 80 percent.

Pemberton officials are quick to defend their school. "There is a belief at Woodland that there is not an academic emphasis as great here as in other Peter Brescia, Pember-ton's interim superintendent. "That is certainly unfounded. The high school is a comprehensive high school with the highest of academic standards." Brescia mentioned eight advanced placement courses and a media center "probably second to none. It's got all the technology you'd want to prepare students," he said.

Moving the students could also have an impact on Woodland taxpayers. Woodland Superintendent Robert Backer said that instead of paying tuition per student, the township would join the property tax system of the Lenape district. Thomas Rende, Lenape's assistant superintendent, said the school system would tax Woodland property owners based on a percentage of the area's total tax levy for schools. Rende declined to release final calculations. One concern Lenape officials might have about receiving Woodland students is capacity.

The largest school in the system, Shawnee High School in Medford, is slightly above capacity with about 2,300 students, according to Daniel Hicks, superintendent of the Lenape system. Cherokee High School in Evesham is at capacity with about 1,900 students, and Lenape High School in Medford is slightly below capacity with about 1,900 students, he said. Shawnee High School draws students from Medford, Medford Lakes, Shamong and Tabernacle Townships. Cherokee draws students from Marlton and Evesham, and Lenape draws students from Medford, Southampton and Mount Laurel Townships. Because Woodland would send so few students no more than 30 for all four grades to any of those schools, Backer hopes capacity is not be a big factor in Lenape's decision.
