irn i I' 1 1 Friday, December 3, 1993 The Philadelphia Inquirer A sensitive story of wartime Holland I x. 0 2 I MOVIE REVIEW I I FOR A LOST SOLDIER V4 Produced by Matthijs van Heijingen, directed and written by Roeland Kerbosch, photography by Nils Post, music by Joop Stokkermans, distributed by Strand Releasing. In English and Outch with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour, 32 mins. Young Jeroen Maarten Smit Adult Jeroen Jeroen Krabbe Walt Andrew Kelley Hait Feark Smink Mem Elsje de Wijn Parent's guide: No MPAA rating (sex, nudity) Showing at: Roxy Screening Rooms By Desmond Ryan INQUIRER MOVIE CRITIC "This," announces the schoolteacher to the only pupil left in his classroom, "is an historic moment one you will never forget." The year is 1945, the place is Holland, and the liberation of Europe from Nazi tyranny certainly would qualify as a pivotal memory in anyone's life.

But what Jeroen, the 13-year-old protagonist in Roeland Kerbosch's For a Lost Soldier, has discovered in the march of great events is a more troubling form of release. For a Lost Soldier is couched in the familiar terms of a wartime coming-of-age drama and echoes John Boorman's Hope and Glory in its conviction that kids will be kids, whatever the circumstances. The difference and it is one that puts For a Lost Soldier on treacherous ground is that Jer-oen's sexual awakening is initiated by a gay Canadian soldier. The obvious delicacy of this story is something that Kerbosch handles is no advocacy or editorializing and no attempt to anachronistically impose the views of a more tolerant age on this troubled adolescent. Jeroen is sent to rural Northern Holland to escape what was known as the Hunger Winter of 1944.

He is one of the few city children fortunate enough to be taken in by country families in regions where food remained plentiful and Germans scarce. Jeroen's foster parents are strictly religious and loving, but he finds it difficult to respond because he is dealing with feelings of abandonment as well as the usual confusions of puberty. When Walt arrives in the village with other Canadian soldiers, there is jubilation and, for Jeroen, even more confusion. Walt is kind, gentle and outgoing, and the lonely Jeroen is drawn to him. To this point, For a Lost Soldier is an acutely observed portrait of adolescent yearning, and discreet to the point of being cryptic on the sub-' After a village party in "For a Lost Soldier," Walt, a Canadian soldier, flings Jeroen high while teaching the boy to jitterbug.

Walt and what misgivings he might have about taking advantage of a guileless boy especially when he knows he will soon be moving on. More important, we do not know what effect, for good or ill, the relationship had on Jeroen in later years. In the end, we must draw or infer our own conclusions. ject of how far a platonic bond can stretch before it becomes something else. This sensitivity is certainly a valid approach, given the volatility of the material, but For a Lost Soldier ultimately loses its way.

What was even-handed becomes simply open-ended. We do not find out enough about deftly. The relationship develops naturally even though it unfolds in a time when homosexuality was condemned as unnatural and abhorrent, and Kerbosch's greatest strength is his evenhandedness. The story is told as a flashback with Jeroen, now a middle-aged choreographer, reflecting on the distant past. But there SHOWTIMES FOR TODAY ONLY-MOTION PICTURE RATINGS: ILL AGES ADMITTED.
