The name is ponderous but typically upbeat and offbeat, as any good alternative rock festival should be (think Lollapalooza). This one is called HORDE, and after a half-dozen phone calls, we finally figured out what it stands for: Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere. Profound, eh? Tickets go on sale today for the Aug.

24 show at the Mann Music Center billed as "alternative to alternative" (does that make it mainstream?) and featuring such bands as the harmonica-laden Blues Traveler, reggae masters Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, and the hard rock of the Black Crowes, along with lesser-known acts such as Morphine, God Street Wine and Mother Hips (excellent names, dude). The show, starting at 5 p.m. is six hours of music on two stages and offers a full "Counter-Culture Concourse" with workshops and guest speakers. Tickets can be obtained at the Mann, Ticketmaster locations and by phone: 215-336-2000. New Hope performing arts festival.

The ninth annual festival of music and theater in Bucks County's quaint New Hope area runs July 14 through Aug. 27 and opens with a production that sounds like an early Woody Allen flick: My Life as a Christian the Greatest Story Ever Kvetched (July 14-22). Other plays include Pinstripe Suite, a show about corporate downsizing; and Remnants, a "voice play" consisting of monologues of six Holocaust survivors. Both run July 28-Aug. 6.

The Valentine Touch (Aug. 18-27), is a classic comedymusical spoof about a safecracker who is released from prison and about to start a new life with his girlfriend. Concerts feature a band from Northern Ireland called Craobh Rua (Gaelic for Red Branch) on July 17; the Flirtations, an a cappella group (featured in the movie Philadelphia) on July 24; and the contemporary sounds of Trapezoid on Aug. 10. All performances are at the Solebury School, Phillips Mill Road, off River Road, New Hope.

It promises to be like a sultry day in Savannah, on July 22, when the Trease Catering Picnic Grounds in Morrisville, Bucks County, fall under the sway of the soul-stirring, string-pickin', finger-snapping sounds of Studebaker John the Hawks, L'il Georgie the Shuffling Hungarians and Cathy Donnelly. They'll perform from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
