E2 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Wednesday, July 19, 1995 IN PERFORMANCE A Review: Music Dutoit leads Phila. Orchestra in Tchaikovsky and fireworks Review: Film 'Clueless' and chaste, yet cool J.1 The Philadelphia Orchestra Charles Dutoit conducting; Peter Jablonski, piano, and Wendy Warner, cello, soloists. Performed Monday at the Mann Music Center. Additional performances: Today and tomorrow with different programs and soloists. Tickets are $12 to $27.

Information: 215-878-7707. Holding his concentration wasn't easy. Cannons went off unexpectedly during his playing, him JumP- Wendy Warner is part of that new and critical generation of players who find exactitude the overriding part of romanticism. Her reading of the Variations was thoughtfully proportioned and musically presented. Her feeling for the rococo provjded articulate phrasing and an overall balance that defines Dutoit had prefaced this soloistic showcase with Romeo and Juliet.

The reading eased the orchestra into the Tchaikovsky style and mood, ji- io tlMmmUSsItrmlu li li i ijfc By Carrie Rickey INQUIRER MOVIE CRITIC We who are tragically uncool, we who are majorly challenged, we who are without a clue are totally fortunate to have Cher explain it all to us. We're not talking Cher the singer of the past who now does infomer-cials. We're talking Cher Horowitz, the beauteous blonde Betty of Clueless, a fabulously funny Beverly Hills 90210 satire that is, go figure, a faithful update of Jane Austen's Emma. Update is the wrong word. Let's snag Cher's vocab.

It's, like, a total makeover. It's also, like, totally, ma- Cher Horowitz (Alicia SilverstoneJ, the most popular girl at Bronson Alcott High, with pal Josh (Paul RuddJ in "Clueless." His playing had its big moments, but the scale of the reading was always within bounds, and the biggest moments came in the poetic sections where nuance and sound were the key elements. Clueless Produced by Scott Rudin and Robert Lawrence, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, photography by Bill Pope, music by David Kitay, distributed by Paramount Pictures. Running time: 1 hour, 40 mins. Cher Alicia Silverstone Dionne StaceyDash Josh PaulRudd Mel Dan Hedaya Tai Brittany Murphy Parent's guide: PG-13 (sexual candor, creative profanity, marijuana) Showing at area theaters Moviegoing by the numbers Movies with numbers in their titles had great box-office numbers over the weekend.

Apollo 13 continued to soar at $15.6 million, Under Siege 2 placed with $12.6 million and Nine Months was a strong show, earning $12.5 million. In its fifth weekend, Pocahontas passed the $100 million mark. i By Daniel Webster INQUIRER MUSIC CRITIC The Philadelphia Orchestra flung Tchaikovsky into the teeth of the booming gale Monday, beginning its final week of outdoor concerts with thunder, lightning and cannon shots. Charles Dutoit conducted the showy program for the largest crowd of the season. Fireworks promised for after the 1812 Overture helped to swell the crowd past the 10,000 mark.

The all-Tchaikovsky program was shaped to build to the climax of the overture, in which the finale was livened by Paul Burnett and his trained cannon. The real-life thunderstorm, which had been building through the earlier selections, began to supply rumbles and flashes for the overture, offering counterpoint to the cannon in the kind of booming, grand finale a conductor could only hope for. Before the overture's cannonade and bells, Dutoit had introduced two young soloists. Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski made his local debut in the Piano Concerto No. 1, and cellist Wendy Warner, a Curtis Institute product, played her Mann Center debut as soloist in the Variations on a Rococo Theme.

The Piano Concerto is so laden with expectations that a young soloist must tremble at the idea of bringing something new and valuable to it. Jablonski brought respectful integrity to his reading. This was not the flashing-hands-and-waving-arms Tchaikovsky, but an energetic, precise performance as memorable for its lyricism as for its pyrotechnics. The romantic gesture has undergone some accommodations as generations of pianists have fashioned their interpretations of Tchaikovsky to the air around them. For Jablonski, romanticism is to be con jorly, chronically funny.

If you're a young adult (or even a middle-aged one) the antics of Cher and her best bud Dionne play like Wayne's World, The Gold Card. Clueless was written and directed by Amy Heckerling, and is the director's best work since her breakout Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Cher (Alicia Silverstone, the stunner from Aerosmith music videos) combines Ricki Lake's unkillable enthusiasm with supermodel Niki Taylor's killer looks. Her mother, Cher breezily informs us, died "in a fluke accident during routine liposuction." Perhaps because of this, Cher spends most of her waking hours (when not applying liner to her poutily perfect lips) mothering others. This generally takes the form of making sure Dad eats right and that girlfriends are properly accessorized.

As for boys, well, Cher holds that high school males are much like puppies. You have to walk them, feed them and give them flea baths and all you get in return is a creature that jumps on you and slobbers. Cher is the most popular girl at Bronson Alcott High, named for Louisa May's educator father, not to mention a place where everybody has a nose job or a nose ring. But Cher's Gcing Out A free-for-all tonight. Guitar Shorty, billed as the "wildest blues guitar showman," will play for free at 7 in Rittenhouse Square.
