Belvan Barnes, 20 Homicides jump to 28 Homicides, From 1A patterns," said State Attorney Norm Wolfinger, whose agency reviews cases involving homicides. "But some of these are ones where you couldn't have spotted them, these are more or less on the fringe," he said In at least nine domestic situations, anger boiled over and led to slayings, authorities said That includes a brother who stabbed a brother, husbands who shot their wives, a son who beat and strangled his mother, and a father who filled his home with fumes from his vehicle to kill his two daughters, authorities said. The last case illustrates the difficulty in knowing when or if a situation will turn violent. Authorities said 60-year-old Muhamad Raja, a Pakistani native, kept an immaculate home for his two daughters, Rabia, 10, and Muna, 5. The physical therapist was a widower who lost his wife two years earlier.

Family members had been concerned about his mental state after her death, but only after investigators found the three dead in their Palm Bay home from carbon-monoxide poisoning were the depths of Raja's depression known. Investigators later suspected that he feared he was not able to continue caring for his two daughters. The Raja case was one of four murder-suicide cases to take place in Brevard this year. Homicides, as did much of violent crime, declined in the months following the Sept 11 terrorist attacks, but the rates seem to be returning to normal, said University of South Florida professor Donna Cohen. She specializes in aging and mental health studies.

"The world is becoming increasingly stressful. After 9-11, people were coming together, but with that behind us, you can see a level of normalcy returning," Cohen said Brevard's 28 homicides this year do not a record By far, 1986 remains the most violent year on record in the county with 42 slayings, said Assistant State Attorney Michael Hunt Many of those were drug-related when cocaine fueled much of the violence. Meantime, the State Attorney's Office has focused efforts on reducing gun-related crimes and continuing domestic violence outreach programs aimed at educating victims. "I do believe there are things we can do. What we do today could determine who gets killed tomorrow," Wolfinger said, pointing to one pro Lewis armed.
