20 G4 The Philadelphia Inquirer I eiCflblUll Wednesday, October 6, 1993 Channel 29 intends to drop Lee McCarthy, keep Jill Chernekoff raraWPPTOWWfl III MJJ 'M 3 i Gail Shister TVRadio Talk i i A W7mmlmF 1-1 1 "I'm angry, but I have no time for anger or bitterness," McCarthy adds. "I have two kids in college and another in graduate school. I've got to find a job." Beaned in Beantown. NBC's Jane Pauley was struck by a heavy stage light Monday during an interview at the Boston Globe with columnist Ellen Goodman. While a cameraman was setting up for a wide shot, a 10-inch Fresnel light snapped loose and hit the seated Pauley on the noggin.

The collision of the light with Pauley's head sounded like "heavy metal hitting a watermelon," according to producer Susan Adams. Amazingly, Pauley suffered no cuts or Major shakeup at Channel 29. In a shocker, Lm McCarthy, SO, respected anchor of The Ten O'clock News since its February 1986 launch, has been told that his two-year contract won't be renewed after it expires Jan. 7. He's expected to continue anchoring through next month's ratings "sweeps" before a replacement is named.

"We want to keep doing better, and we think we've got to do this change to accomplish that," says WTXF news boss Roger LaMay, offering no details. LaMay says he does expect to renew co-anchor Jill Chernekoff, 37, whose deal is also up Jan. 7. McCarthy was "stunned, overwhelmed and devastated" when he got the news, he said yesterday. A 17-year veteran of NBC News before joining Channel 29, he has never been let go before.

"I had no inkling it was coming. I had never been told they were unhappy or that they were even considering changing the news in any way. All I could get out of Roger was that I'm not the reason people watch the news. I never thought I was. I thought I was part of the product, like everybody else." At an estimated $225,000 a year, McCarthy is the highest-paid news talent at TXF.

He is also the oldest newsroom staffer. He says air next month on Dateline NBC. Pauley yesterday received a huge bouquet from her crew. Says she of her first such mishap in 21 years as an intrepid TV journalist: "Maybe I needed a little rap on the head to get all the cobwebs out." Williams' first. Here's a mind-twister: Off-the-wall funnyguy Robin Williams will make his first-ever dramatic guest shot in an episode of NBC's Homicide: Lie on the Street.

In the segment, to air when the acclaimed series returns for four episodes in midseason, Williams plays a tourist whose wife is killed in a mugging. The episode just finished shooting in Baltimore. It's the first time that Williams is appearing on episodic TV since Mork Mindy, his ABC series that ran from 1978 to 1982. Homicide exec producer Barry Levinson and Williams have a long history. Williams starred in two Levinson big-screeners: Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), for which Williams won an Oscar nomination, and the more recent Toys (1992), a major flop.

Short stuff. Republican-turned-Ross Perot strategist Ed Rollins has joined NBC's Today show as part of its "political insiders" team. Rollins will join Democrat Bob Squier on the twice-monthly Lee McCarthy's contract expires Jan. 7. The newscaster has, been with "The Ten O'clock News" since its launch in 1986.

age probably has nothing to do with his imminent departure, but money does. "My salary always seemed to rankle management," McCarthy says. LaMay denies money was a factor. While The Ten O'clock News is on a ratings roll, WTXF is on the verge of a major identity crisis. TXF will lose its Fox affiliation and 39 hours of programming per week, including its entire prime-time lineup when the sale of Channel 57 to Fox is approved.

That could happen as early as January. In addition, the Paramount-owned station is facing the prospect of new ownership. It will be either Viacom or QVC, depending on who wins the red-hot bidding war for Paramount. "From day one, Channel 29 made an investment in me," McCarthy says. "I gave them credibility, competence and class right out of the gate.

Obviously, after almost eight years, they think they don't need me anymore. The rationale is beyond me. Hi fj A iP I I bruises. Slightly dazed, she sat on the floor before lying on the carpet in a conference room for 20 minutes with an ice pack on her head. Then she returned to do 30 more minutes of the interview.
