Cold remedies called ineffective by study WASHINGTON (AP) The National Academy of Sciences accepts less than 10 per cent of effectiveness claims made for a representative sampling of 27 nonprescription cold remedies. Among popular over-the- counter (OTC) compounds rated ineffective in a report released today Is Coricldin cold tablets, manufactured by Sehering Corp. of Bloomfield, Contac sustained-release capsules, made by Menley James Laboratories of Philadelphia, were judged possibly effective, meaning there is no evidence that they work 42 hours against cold congestion. Among 45 effectiveness claims for the cold remedies evaluated, the academy's Nat i a 1 Research Council judged four as effective, eight ineffective as fixed combinations, five effective with reservations, 15 possibly effective and 13 probably effective. Rated effective without reservation were Isophrin nose drops for nasal congestion; Fedrazil for hay fever; and Chlorephrine Nyscaps for hay-fever nasal congestion and as a time-release capsule.

Business, politics having financial love feast Congressional Quarterly WASHINGTON Business and politics are having a financial love feast this presidential election year. And to both sides, it's the real thing. What business is doing is helping make the national conventions possible througli generous purchases of advertising space in the convention programs more than $2-million worth. What the political parties are doing in addition to selling the two-party system is providing business with some prime advertising opportunities. The Democrats "still trying to pay for their 196? convention have netted about $750,000 of their convention costs from sales of about $l-mllllon in program ads.

They expect to clear another $1GUOOO to $150,000 from a special Florida supplement to their program, which they will share with the Florida Democratic Party. The Republicans expect to' clear just over $l-million in ad sales. That would take care of about two-thirds of their convention expenses, which have been scaled down since they decided to meet in Miami Beach instead of San Diego. The Republicans follow the Democrats to Florida in August. Coca-Cola Company again this year is trying the premium display space of the programs the back covers for each.

Other companies buying two ads in both programs for a minimum of $20,000 a program are Ford, General Motors and the Motion Picture Association of America, The minimum price for each program is $10,000 for a single page ad. As of June 30, the Republicans, who will end ad sales in July, had 62 ads which did not appear in the regular Democratic program. The Democrats had seven advertisers who were not on the Republican list, including two from the International Telephone and Telegraph family: ITT Community Development Corp- and Sheraton Hotel Motor Inns, ITT, the parent organization, had an ad in each program. Richard Herman, vice chairman of the Republican arrangements committee, said there had been no effort to tone down the relationship between the Republicans and ITT as a result of the controversy over an alleged connection between a contribution by ITT to the Republican convention and settlement of ITT anti-trust cases. "Probably we were just and only got one ad," he 'told Congressional Quarterly.

Herman and George L. Bristol, the Democrats' chief convention joined forces to sell corporate America on'the importance of supporting both parties. Bristol said he sold 95 per cent of his ads on that basis. "By God, they owe it to the two-party system," he told Congressional Quarterly. Herman said, "I think most of them are pleased to par- in providing funds to support the convention process." Business sees an advantage for its side, too.

As Pier Clifford, advertising' manager for Southern Railway, put it: "We do it because it's good business. It's what call in advertising lingo an 'up-scale audience' opinion leaders, movers, shakers in one way or another. You couldn't ask for a better audience." Bill Pruett, an assistant vice president of Coca-Cola said his goes for maximum exposure situations and a political convention fits the bill nicely. A national political convention, he said, "is uniquely American and has tremendous attention on it." Coca-Cola dates its political convention support to 1912, when it gave way, free drinks as a promotional device, civic duty and good business aren't enough incentives, there's another one. The advertising is tax deductible, compliments of a law passed by Congress in 1968, as long as the price of the ads is reasonable and the proceeds are used solely for the costs of the convention or a later one.

Two years earlier, Congress bad banned tax deductions for political convention ad vertising, But after both parties had political difficulties financing their 1968 meetings, Congress reversed itself and gave Its blessings to this quadrennial feasting of business and politics. briefs Dividend CHICAGO Directors of Standard Oil Company (Indiana) have declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of 69.8 'cents on each share of capital stock, to be paid September 10, 1972, to stockholders of record at the close of business August 10, 1972. Rep. Paul Findley; has told Egyptian newsmen the United States must adopt a balanced attitude toward both sides in the Middle East. Findley, who told newsmen he favored Egyptian journalists explaining their cause in U.S. newspapers and more congressional visits here, spoke shortly before flying to Israel on Friday. Earlier he had said it was time for Washington to show even handedness in the Middle East by calling on Tel Aviv to either pay compensation for oil taken from the occupied Sinai desert or stop taking it.

He also called for a public restatement by Washington that Israel should give up Arab lands taken in the 1967 war, as called upon to do by the United Nations. Madison County income average below state's Average family income for residents of Madison County is almost $700 less yearly than the State average, reports from the Bureau of Census have shown. 'The average income was $10,249 in Madison County in 1969, compared with for the State, according to the 1970 report released by the census bureau. Per capita income for the county amounted to $3,110. The 1970 census counted 250,934 residents in the county; 1.6 per cent were foreign born and 6.6 per cen native born, with one or both parents born in foreign countries.

Among the county's 229.62E inhabitants age 5 and over in 1970, 13,738 were Hying in a different county wlttiiri the State in 1965, and 13,441 in a different State.
