By Phil Sheridan INQI IKKR STAFF WRITER Nine months ago, Curt Schilling couldn't raise his right arm above shoulder level. Tonight, he will take the mound at Veterans Stadium, rear back with that same right arm, and pitch to men such as Barry Bonds and Matt Williams. "I'm real nervous," Schilling said.

"I have no idea what to expect. There are a lot of questions I need to answer for myself. It's just been so long." On July 18, 1995, Schilling was the winning pitcher in a 7-5 decision over the Colorado Rockies. As he walked off the field in Denver that night, Schilling knew his shoulder was sore. He didn't know what he would have to endure before he pitched in his 'next major-league game.

"I don't remember a lot about that game," Schilling said. "I wasn't thinking it was a big deal when I came out of that game." like a year." On Thursday, after his final rehabilitation start in triple Schilling said he would have to be a different pitcher. He might not be able to deliver the killer fastball he used to fall back on. He had developed other pitches and was looking forward to trying them against big-league hitters. All that was left was that scariest of scary things the unknown.

"I'm confident that I'll throw well," Schilling said, "but I just don't know. I have to go out there. It's like when I pitched in the playoffs in 1993. If you know me, I'm emotional and wound a little tight, and that was the question I had about myself going into the postseason. Now it's the physical part.

So it's a little different." There are questions. Beginning tonight, there will be answers. Curt Schilling, patient, will try to go back to being Curt Schilling, pitcher. "The best thing is that I have a chance to help this team," Schilling said. "We have to keep our heads above water until we can get guys like Gregg Jefferies and Bobby IMunoz back." Schilling had a torn labrum, the layer of cartilage that surrounds the cup of the shoulder.

Surgeon Craig Morgan of Wilmington repaired the tear arthroscopically. That was on Aug. 23. Morgan and Phillies trainer Jeff Cooper told Schilling what to expect, but there was no way to prepare for the feeling in his stomach when he simply couldn't move his arm. "Throwing a baseball is something I had been doing since I was 4 years old," Schilling said.

"Just as normally as other people read and write, I throw. It's something I've done all my life. When you pitch for a living, and you can't make a complete circle with your arm, you have to wonder whether you're ever going to be able to do it again. "I tried not to do a lot of thinking during that first two months after surgery. The physical part of coming back is the hardest thing I've ever had to do, but that wasn't half the battle.

I would wake up in the morning knowing I couldn't even play catch. That was hard mentally, just trying not to get too down when I had days like that. "But, really, every month has felt i The Philadelphia Inquirer RON CORTES Atlanta's John Smoltz is 7-1 this season, with an ERA of 2.28. He has struck out 67 in just 591a innings, walking 12. Murray led off with the walk. J.R. Phillips followed with a solid single to center. Murray held at second on the play. That might have been the end of all the excitement, too.

Gardner struck out Stocker and Fernandez, who fouled off a bunt for strike three. Dykstra followed with a routine grounder to second. Robby Thompson made a routine catch and a routine throw, but the ball popped out of first baseman Mark Carreon's glove and rolled to the fence. Murray scored from second. Gardner got Morandini to fly out to left for the fourth out of the inning.

San Francisco PHILLIES 000 001 1002 11 1 OOP 010 OOOl 6 0 Pitchers Era GGsSv Ip HHr Bb So Phillies Notes Power surge no mystery to the Giants By Phil Sheridan INQUIRER STAFF WRITER A few times this season, Phillies manager Jim Fregosi has been asked for his theories about the incredible surge in offense that baseball has experienced this season. The thing is, Fregosi has attended only games involving the Phillies, whose .227 team average remains the lowest in either league. So he hasn't witnessed much of this boom. Dusty Baker has.

He manages the San Francisco Giants, which means he sees Barry Bonds play every day. Bonds, who has 17 home runs and 46 RBIs, is on a pace to hit 74 homers and drive in 201 runs. While that isn't likely to happen recent baseball history is full of players who got off to Ruthian starts only to slow down it certainly seems like something is up. It's not just Bonds. Eighteen players had hit 10 or more home runs before last night.

"In our situation," Baker said before last night's gamd against the Phillies, "we built our team to be offensive-oriented. The pitching that was available was either out of our price range or young kids who would need to be developed. "Overall, I think the main thing is that guys came to camp this year in better shape than ever, especially with the labor problems of the past two years." Giants third baseman Matt Williams, who has eight homers this year, said he thought the biggest change was in the hitters. Not the ball, not the pitching, not the weather. "Guys are stronger," Williams said.

"Traditionally, middle infield-ers and centerfielders were singles hitters. That was the stereotype. But those guys are spending a lot more time in the gym. The old stereotypes just don't apply anymore. "If you're a shortstop and you can hit the ball out of the park, more power to you." Literally.

Phillies catcher Benito Santiago is an example of what weight work can do. Santiago's career high for home runs is 18, which he hit as a 22-year-old rookie. This spring, after hitting the weights in the off-season, Santiago has hit nine homers. Baker suggested two other factors: the "dilution" of pitching talent due to expansion and new rules. "It would be a lot easier to hit if you weren't worried about being knocked on your butt," Baker said.

"The rules against hitting people make it a little easier to be comfortable up there." Amaro sent down. After the game, the Phillies announced that outfielder Ruben Amaro had been out-righted to triple-A ScrantonWilkes-Barre. Amaro, signed last week after being released by the Blue Jays organization, will join the Red Barons in Richmond, in time for their game tomorrow. The move was necessary to make room on the roster for Curt Schilling. Schilling will be activated from the disabled list today, and is scheduled to start against the Giants tonight.

The Phillies will have to make another decision next week, when outfielder Lee Tinsley is eligible to come off the DL. Tinsley strained a muscle in his side on May 5. To make room for Tinsley, the Phillies could drop one of the 12 pitchers on the roster. Or they could decide to release Mark Whiten. That seems unlikely, because the Phils would have to eat the balance of Whiten's $800,000 salary.

With three righthanders due up after Eisenreich, Baker seemed to be taking a calculated risk with the move. After falling behind, 3-1, DeLucia struck Eisenreich out looking.

The third strike was low and on the outside corner. That brought up cleanup hitter Todd Zeile, who got to a 2-2 count and then fouled off a pitch. DeLu-cia's next pitch was a fastball over the middle. Zeile swung and missed to end the inning. DcLucia struck out two more in the eighth.

"I didn't think their pitching was very good, to be honest with you," Fregosi said. "I just didn't think we swung the bats very well." Rod Beck pitched the ninth inning for his ninth save. He struck out only one Phillie. Fregosi has tried mixing and matching his hitters to get a productive lineup on the field. He said last night that there wasn't much more that could be done.

"It's not a good time of year to try to revamp a ballclub," Fregosi said. "The guys who are here are going to have to get the job done." Until the sixth, the Giants' hits were spaced too far apart to do much damage. Even in the sixth, when the Giants finally got on the scoreboard, they managed to get only one run out of two doubles and a single. The Giants hit two singles in the first inning without scoring. The Phillies were more efficient.

They had to be. Except for Eiscn-reich's infield single in the first inning, they didn't get a man on base against Gardner until Zeile singled with two out in the fourth. And when they scored in the fifth, they did it with a walk, a single and an All limes Eastern.
