Holyfield will climb back into ring in May HOLYFIELD from E1 "Evander may be the most carefully examined boxer in history," Hazzard said yesterday. The comeback represents what may be the most remarkable rally in the career of a fighter known for remarkable rallies.

Holyfield took 341 punches against Moorer last spring, none of them as shocking as the one he absorbed from a group of doctors after the fight. The ex-champion, they said, was suffering from a condition known as a "noncompliant" left ventricle or "stiff heart" which prevents sufficient oxygen from being pumped to the muscles and tissues. The doctors advised the warrior to retire, and he did without bitterness or regret. "When I retired, I wasn't devastated at all," Holyfield said. "I was glad.

I was relieved. I always talked about the positive aspects of boxing, but I never talked about the negative. "It's not a good feeling to get hit in the head. It's not a good feeling to kill yourself in the gym. It's not a good feeling to leave home for weeks at a time." Then why come back to embrace a sport that is so cruel and unforgiving? "It's not about money," said Holyfield, who earned more than $100 million in a pro career that began in 1984.

"I'm not really over-anxious about fighting again. I'm coming back to uplift the Lord. I'm coming back to show that He healed me, and to let other people know that they can be healed, too. Just keep the faith." Holyfield initially attributed his medical recovery to his experience with Benny Hinn, a faith healer who laid hands on the ex-champion last summer at the Philadelphia Civic Center. "Hinn told me I was cured, and I said, Holyfield recalled.

"Then he said you better get to a doctor to make sure." Holyfield followed the advice, first going to Crawford Long Hospital in Georgia, then the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. "The doctors at the Mayo Clinic laughed," Holyfield recalled. "They said they had never seen anyone in the kind of good health that I was in. They said if they ever got to see anyone who lived to 100 years old, 1 would be the guy." It turns out, Holyfield said, that when he was examined by doctors immediately after the Moorer fight in Las Vegas, he was injected with fluids and medication doses that affected his heart rate and skewed the results of the more thorough examinations he underwent back home in Atlanta. "The Las Vegas doctors never told my doctors in Atlanta, but they gave me three different kinds of medication, and that slowed down my heart rate," Holyfield said.

"Plus, I was dehydrated after the fight, I went from 212 pounds to 204, so they gave me some fluids, and I shot back up to over 230. It was too much for my system." So the miraculous recovery that Holyfield attributed to the faith healer was really the result of a misdiagnosis? Holyfield said simply. Is Holyfield concerned that the fight may attract morbid fans who want to see if he will get hurt? "I've thought about that," Holyfield said. "But the best thing I can do is perform to the best of my ability to show I'm all right. I'm going to work as hard as I did before.
