At A FDA OKs new contraceptive PALO ALTO (AP) ALZA Corp. announced Thursday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its once-a-year uterine birth control product the first in the nation. Final approval for marketing the Progestasert Therapeutic System requires FDA review of labeling and packaging which is expected to take one or two months. said ALZA spokeswoman Jacqueline Horgath.

"What we received was approval of the product pending review of labeling and packaging," she said? "This is the big one. Once you get this approval, you've got it." Alza said the product i is inserted into the uterus and is the first "targetoriented" hormonal contraceptive. That is, it affects only one organ the uterus and does not get into the blood stream and other organs. The device is T-shaped and is inserted like an intrauterine device. The membrane- drug reservoir releases a continuous low dose of progesterone directly into the uterus to prevent conception for one year.

Mrs. Horgath said the device does not affect the menstrual cycle. She said it has no known side effects, but that like the IUD some women are unable to use it. Erratic winds of 10 to 25 miles per hour were pushing the fire, which was being fought by 25 men with the aid of 10 fire trucks, two helicopters and a bulldozer. Striking firemen pay cut SANTA BARBARA (UPI) County firemen striking for a shorter work week were given automatic 5 per cent pay cuts Thursday as they stayed off their jobs for the fourth straight day.

County Fire Chief John Risdon warned the firemen that they will be fired if they don't return to work by Saturday, but union officials insisted they will not go back until their workweek is reduced from to 60 hours. Many of the county's residents, those living in small communities or in the unincorporated outskirts of the larger cities such as Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Lompoc, were left with minimal fire protection. Some 800 other county workers, represented by the Service Employes International Union, also stayed out on strike Thursday, in their protest for higher pay and better working conditions. Negotiations with a mediator dispatched by Gov. Brown continued in two separate locations, but there were no reports of progress.

GOP loss seen with Reagan By GIL BAILEY Our National Bureau California Atty. Gen. Evelle Younger told a Washington press conference Thursday that it would not be "in the publie interest or the interest of the Republican Party" for former Gov. Ronald Reagan to opose President Ford in the GOP primaries next year. Younger expressed fears that primary opposition could cause President Ford's defeat by a Democrat in the 1976 presidential election.

Younger, as the only statewide republican official left in California, said he expected President Ford to be elected in 1976 if the Republican Party does not engage in interparty warfare. He stressed the advantages of "incumbency" and what he termed President Ford's fine record. "A third party movement headed by Gov. Reagan would be disastrous to the Republican Party," said Younger, who was obviously trying to push Reagan out of the presidential race. "I don't think any Republican should enter the primaries against him (President Ford).

I would be surprised if one did," Younger said. "I don't expect him (Gov. Reagan) to become one (a candidate)," the California attorney general added. However, Younger agreed that "Reagan is Ford's number one political problem." The former California governor is considering entering the presidential race and he has said he will make up his mind within the next six months. Reagan has been touring the country giving speeches to enthusiastic conservative audiences.

Younger warned that "any strong opposition to Ford could the Republicans the He added, "if President Ford doesn't run, I doubt if any Republican can be elected Younger did advance the idea of a Ford-Reagan ticket, saying he felt Vice President Nelson Rockefeller might not be too interested in running for election in 1976. Thief takes old woman's burial money LEBANON, Ore. (AP) The thief who robbed 83- year-old Sally Presley of her life savings last week may also have robbed her of her final wish a decent burial.
