C8 Tuesday, February 21, 1995 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Death Notices Obituaries Continued from preceding page MORA -in Bob Stinson, 35, rock's high-energy guitarist Irving Kosloff 82, ex-owner of 76ers hard time these last couple weeks with his depression," she said. "He was down about it. But he did say that he was taking steps to get with a psychiatrist on that. Other than that, he was Bob." Despite his recent battles with depression, Stinson Kurth said she was convinced her son's death was not a suicide. "I think it was accidental; I really believe that," she said.

"I don't think it was intentional." Mr. Stinson, who made six recordings with the Replacements, developed a reputation as a lightning-wristed, wholly unconventional lead guitar player, inspired by his six-string heroes Steve Howe, Johnny Winter and Prince. As a performer, Mr. Stinson took to playing gigs in skirts, make-up and the nude. As one observer once wrote, Mr.

Stinson was, for many, "the lunatic guitarist for the only American band that ever mattered." By Jim Walsh KNIGHT RIDDER NEWS SERVICE ST. PAUL, Minn. Bob Stinson, who gained national notoriety as the guitarist for the seminal rock-and-roll band the Replacements, was found dead Saturday at his Minneapolis apartment. Mr. Stinson's body was found about 7 p.m.

by a friend. A syringe was found next to the couch in the apartment. The cause of death was Under investigation. Mr. Stinson's struggle with drug and alcohol abuse led to his ouster from the Replacements in 1986 as well as estrangement from his wife, Carleen, and his 6-year-old son, Joey.

Mr. Stinson, 35, was diagnosed as suffering from a manic-depressive disorder last year and was taking medication to combat intense mood swings, his mother, Anita Stinson Kurth, said. "He had been going through a real "He wanted a team here in the worst way, so when Richman told him he might be able to buy the Syracuse Nationals and move them here, he jumped on it," Harvey Pollock, a longtime friend and the 76ers' director of statistical information, said yesterday. Mr. Kosloff owned the 76ers (the name was selected in a contest) from 1963 through 1976.

During that period, the team made the playoffs nine times and had a 547-512 won-lost record. It reached the Eastern Conference finals three times and the NBA finals once, in 1967, winning with Wilt Chamberlain at center. Chamberlain began his pro career with the Philadelphia Warriors, moved to California when Gottlieb sold the team, and returned to Philadelphia in 1964 in a trade engineered by Richman and Mr. Kosloff. After Richman suffered a fatal heart attack during a game at Boston Garden in the 76ers' second year, Mr.

Kosloff became more involved in running the team. Chamberlain maintained that Richman had promised him part ownership of the franchise. Mr. Kosloff said he knew of no such arrangement. In 1968, he reluctantly traded Chamberlain to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Under Mr. Kosloff's ownership, the 76ers had the best single-season record, to that point, in the history of the NBA 68 wins and 13 losses in the 1966-67 championship season and the worst, 9-73 in 1972-73. The latter record stands. In 1976, Mr. Kosloff sold most of his interest in the team to F.

Eugene Dixon. After the team was sold again, to Harold Katz in 1980, Mr. Kosloff's interest was reduced to season tickets, which he and his wife of 57 years, the former Libby Barash, used regularly. Until illness slowed him recently, George M. Harbison, 60? headed Abington Savings 1 iwS i- Irving S.

Kosloff in a 1976 photograph. Mr. Kosloff and his wife were fixtures at the Spectrum on game days, sitting immediately behind the visitors' bench. "He was at the top of his field in the paper business, but he was an, average owner," Mr. Kosloff's son, Ted, president of the paper company, said yesterday.

By working 12-hour days six days a week, Mr. Kosloff built Roosevelt named for his political hero, Franklin D. Roosevelt, though he said he named it after Teddy Roosevelt when he discovered that FDR was unpopular with many of his customers from a one-man shop during the Depression to a business with 500 employees. Mr. Kosloff was a creature of habit.

He bought his suits year after year at Diamonds, choosing shades of gray and blue guaranteed not to draw attention. From 1960 on, he lived in the same home in Merion, a modest house, given his wealth. And he insisted, his son said, on answering his own telephone and never had a secretary. "He got into basketball because he loved the sport," Ted Kosloff said. "He didn't like what happened to the game.

It's show business now. It's all agents. In his day, the players and the owners went out to eat after games." In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Kosloff is survived by his daughter, Joyce Cooper; six grandchildren; and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
