Thursday, April 18, 1996 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER C7 Morning 'Good Day Philadelphia': Strong mix of local news, weather, traffic reports maps will also be ready any day now. Maybe he'll fix the weather maps, too; Wilmington, Philadelphia, Trenton and other places that people care about around here are left in a big, dark shadow. The whole show goes in the shadows when Good Day Philadelphia dispatches its not-so-crack remote teams to go out and interview folks on the street at the crack of dawn. Steve Keeley delivered some fine stand-up, including one from the snows of Allentown (skinhead murders), but he's a lousy live interviewer. Cathy Matusiak, who has been missing the last few days, is being TELEVISION from C1 face time.

Good Day coanchor Don Tollefson has come up with an interesting question or two, but his partner, Tracey Matisak, seems slightly at sea in the live interview format. That's a sharp contrast to the pair's overall performance, Matisak is the solid stanchion of professionalism on which the whole enterprise is secured, while Tollefson too frequently comes off as a glad-hander with all the suspect sincerity of a used-car salesman. Preceded by a half-hour newscast at 6:30 a.m., Good Day Philadelphia airs from 7 to 9 a.m. weekdays on box Philadelphia. Tollefson and Matisak anchor hard, reliable 10- or 15-minute newscasts at 7 and 8.

They are strongly slanted to the local side, but segments go wherever news is, from Montana to Washington to Jerusalem. VR Trooper Animaniac Warnerl Mighty Max Dinosaurs Howser Rolonda 77166 Journal Patrol boss LaMay that traffic will be any Afternoon WW! nmnnnffEl mm credible since he started sporting glasses last Friday, seems to give weather reports incessantly, and that's good, though a big wind should come along and blow his weather-nerd trivia questions out the door. He's accompanied by Andrea Lacca, whose smile brings sunshine to the grayest morning, on traffic. Metro Network's three, highly placed remote cameras (the crew demonstrated their automatic windshield wipers at one point) provide a new perspective on Philadelphia. Their pictures, including close-ups of notable landmarks, are among the show's highlights. Five more cameras are on the way, and WTXF news boss Roger La-May promises that the fancy traffic Donya Archer, 6:30 anchor and occasional contributor to the two-hour show, demonstrated a couple of times how a young (29) TV reporter from the minor leagues (El Dorado, and then Harrisburg) can step up to The Show and hit a home run.

Her piece on Peeps, the little marshmallow chicky Easter candies turned out at the JustBorn Candy Co. just west of here, was something to cluck about. Speaking of clucks, somebody needs to slip Valium in Tollefson's Diet Pepsi. The veteran Channel 6 sportscaster's Philly connections benefit Good Day immeasurably, but the newcomers on the show don't need his patronizing. He says "of course" and "absolutely" every other word.

And his boosterism is abominable. "The Phillies have such a good track record," he said after the baseball team, which usually makes fans sit through monsoons so it can keep their money, turned Opening Day into bone-chilling opening night. "'A lot of people overlook agriculture in the Greater Philadelphia region, and we have got some great farmers out there," said Tollefson. "They're good guys out at the Belmont Barracks, as always." "We have so many wonderful print writers in this town." Well, at least he got that right. Fox stations in other cities have had great success with morning shows.

Channel 5 in New York frequently ranks first in the ratings, beating Today and Good Morning America. Good Day Philadelphia may never reach that level. It takes an Ice Age for Philadelphians to change their viewing habits. But the new show already has a lot to recommend it. With some modifications, it could become a potent alternative to the network morning shows.

OUT THERE (1995) (Paramount) 98 minutes. Bill Campbell, June Lockhart. Inquirer staff reviews and synopses, compiled by Christopher Cornell. $19.95 $19.99 Playboy ('96) $19.95 $14.98 done in by a camera operator who must have gone to art school.

A shot through a police car windshield showed water splotches. The poor reporter looked like an idiot trying to run along beside a cyclist in Fair-mount Park. Her interviews also frequently go around in circles. Worst of all is local comedian Graver Silcox. Even the 3-year-olds at Four Seasons Day School in Roxbor-ough were giving him the lame-o look.

Silcox isn't bad at finding neat things happening early in the morning a dairy farm in Yardley, a wacko who thinks she talks to animals, fish-market follies at the South Philly Food Distribution Center but then he's helpless in bringing them alive. Good Day Philadelphia would do well to focus on a few more prepared pieces where are the home and sports sections of this magazine show? and skip some of the live remotes, which can give fits to even the most seasoned network pros. minutes. THE X-FILES: CONDUIT ICE Fox Video, Denotes new listing this week The directorial feature debut from actress Diane Keaton tops this week's list of new movies on home video.

Unstrung Heroes (1996) (Hollywood) 94 minutes. Andie MacDowell, John Turturro, Michael Richards, Maury. Chaykin. A scientist who loses faith in science's ability to save lives, a boy who loses the sun in his solar system, a family that loses, and finds, its religion. Based on the memoir by Franz Lidz, Diane Keaton's directorial feature debut is a heartbreaker with a healing effect.

PG (appropriate for children mature enough to cope with the story about a parent's death). Available on videodisc. (CC) Magic in the Water (1995) (Columbia TriStar)' 100 minutes. Mark Harmon, Harley Jane Kozak, Joshua Jackson. Whole chunks of such marine fantasies as Free Willy, Andre and The Secret of Roan Inish are borrowed for this film about a family who encounter the legend of a lake monster.

And then encounter the monster itself. PG (spooky underwater creature, children in jeopardy). (CC) Cutthroat Island (1995) (LIVE)' 118 minutes. Geena Davis, Matthew Modine, Frank Langella, Maury Chaykin. A leaky, creaky homage to Hollywood's skull-and-crossbones canon of yore, with Davis starring as "the notorious lady pyrate" Morgan Adams.

It's all enjoyably awful, and the gangly actress proves thoroughly ill-suited to the role of distaff Errol Flynn. PG-13 (violence, sexual situations, salty language and saltwater splashing around). Available on videodisc. (CC) Now and Then (1995) (New Line) 97 minutes. Demi Moore, Melanie Griffith, Rosie O'Donnell, Rita Wilson, Christina Ricci.

Tepid and uninvolving coming-of-age piece set in Indiana in 1970 in which girls take over in a male-dominated genre. The wonderful Ricci and three other fine young actresses do their best in a losing cause. PG-13 (language). Available on videodisc. (CC) The Scarlet Letter (1995) (Hollywood) 135 minutes.

Demi Moore, Gary Old-man, Robert Duvall, Joan Plowright. Not a remake so much as a drastic rewrite of the classic that's politically correct and artistically wrong. Moore and Oldman do their muddled best to sell Roland Joffe's modern spin on this tour of Hester Prynne's adultery and the tragedy it unleashes in a Colonial Puritan settlement. (violence, nudity, sex). Available on videodisc.

(CC) To Die For (1995) (Columbia TriStar) 106 minutes. Nicole Kidman, Matt Dillon, Joaquin Phoenix. Despite a delicious performance by Kidman as Suzanne, a cable TV weathergirl with killer ambition and instincts, this is a mostly stale satire of media culture. (violence, discreet sex, sexual candor, profanity). Available on videodisc.
