Clement of France; Card a won Oscar By Marilyn August ASSOCIATED PRESS PARIS French filmmaker Rene Clement, 82, best-known for his action-packed account of the liberation of Paris in Is Paris has died. Mr. Clement's finest achievements included The Battle of the Rails (1945), a quasi-documentary about the French Resistance and its successful sabotage of the national railways during World War IL. In. 1966 he directed Is Paris a pseudo-documentary re-creation of the French capital's liberation and the Nazis' attempt to destroy it. film starred Charles Boyer, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Leslie Caron, Alain Delon, Kirk Douglas, Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, Robert Stack and Orson Welles.

Gore Vidal and Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay from the Larry CollinsDominique Lapierre best-seller. In 1949, Mr. Clement won an Oscar for best foreign film for Beyond the Gates. In 1984, he earned a Cesar, the French equivalent of Hollywood's Oscar, for his life's work. Critics said Mr.

Clement's most successful film was Forbidden Games (1952), the tale of a child adrift in France during the war. Other films include Purple Noon (1957), Rider on the Rain (1970), and the thriller The Cursed (1947). No information on survivors or funeral arrangements was available. Pastor W. Lee Benson, 82, art instructor By Herb Drill INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT Pastor W.

Lee Benson, 82, of an art instructor and a retired Orthodox Presbyterian minister, died Thursday at Abington Memorial Hospital: Pastor Benson served Methodist churches in New Hampshire and Maryland in the 1940s. From 1949 to 1952, he taught at the Camden County Christian School in New Jersey. He reentered the ministry with the Orthodox Presbyterian denomination at a church in Ringoes, N.J., where he served for 27 years before his 1979 retirement. He then moved to Baltimore, where he did maintenance work in a Lutheran school for five years and taught art to senior citizens at Essex Community College from 1984 to 1992. In 1992, he moved to Hatboro and, until his death, taught art to elementary school students who were homebound.

Pastor Benson was born in Baltimore and graduated in 1930 from Towson (Md.) High School. He studtied commercial art at the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts. He furthered his studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle, and earned his degree in-1940. Switching careers, he enrolled at the Boston University School of Theology. He graduated in 1943.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred Plack Benson; a daughter, Barbara B. Cottenden; a son, Robert and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Trinity Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 151 W. County Line Hatboro.

The family will greet friends after the service. Burial was yesterday in Baltimore. The family suggests memorial contributions to Worldwide Outreach, Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 607 N. Easton Building E. Willow Grove, Pa.
