Sunday, February 19, 1995 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER NJ-C13 SOUTH JERSEY HIGH SCHOOLS Paulsboro wins another state wrestling title Petrillo sets mark in win for W. Deptford at 136 pounds, but Paulsboro rebounded with three wins from Jason Brown at 144, Tony Chila at 153, and Greg Harvey's 57-sucond fall at 162 to build a 34-6 advantage. The victories over South River and Pequannock raised Morina's 10-year coaching record to 2054-2. "We've got four losses this year and Paulsboro has four losses in 10 years," said Pequannock coach Len Smith, whose Panthers were appearing in their first state final. "All I know is that we beat a team I Hasbrouck HeightsI that was 17-0 in the semifinals, and then we get beat by 27 points in the final.

That tells you something about Paulsboro." The results Paulsboro 45, Pequannock 18 102 pounds: Demien Green, Pa, dec. The Red Raiders stormed past visiting Pequannock, 45-18, last night to win an unprecedented 13th consecutive state Group 1 wrestling title. Coach Paul Morina's team, ranked No. 3 in South Jersey by The Inquirer, completed a 23-0 season by winning 10 of the 13 bouts. The 16-time South Jersey Group 1 champion defeated Central Jersey champion South River, 40-21, in yesterday afternoon's semifinals to advance into the title match. Pequannock (144), the North Jersey, Section 2 winner, beat Hasbrouck Heights, 43-22, in the semifinals.

"We try never to let complacency set in when we get to the state final, even though we've won it 13 years in a row," said Paulsboro senior Brian Peck, who had a 21-6 technical fall at 187 pounds to give the Red Raiders a 39-12 lead against the Morris County team. "Even though we've won the state title for 13 straight years, I think our fans and our community never take it for granted," Peck said. "They know that each year is different and that each year new kids step into our lineup. I think our fans look at each one of our teams as an individual one and they never get used to us winning state titles." Paulsboro won the first five bouts against Pequannock and took a 21-0 lead when junior Seneca Cooper pinned Bill Juliano in 3 minutes, 22 seconds at 128 pounds to raise his season record to 25-1. Middle Township girls win thriller St i I- I n- Vl 1 I T. i A i if Sri' HA 7 I 7 v2 nr By Bob Hoffman INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT Occasionally, a game between highly ranked, undefeated opponents lives up to expectations. The Middle Township-Haddonfield nonleague girls' basketball matchup yesterday did just that as Middle Township (22-0) nipped host Haddonfield, 66-65, in double overtime. Reserve guard Carey Koch provided the winning points with two free throws with 34 seconds left in the second extra period.

Koch's shots made it 66-63, but two free throws by Haddonfield's Abby George cut the deficit to one, at 66-65, with 14 seconds to go. Following a missed foul shot by Middle's Lauren Repici, Haddonfield (20-1) got one last chance, but a 10-footer by Brie Cokos bounced off the rim just before the buzzer. "It was a great game," Middle Township coach Gary Barber said. "We had key people in foul trouble, but our other kids stepped up." At the top of that list was Koch, a 5-foot-6 senior guard who knocked down three critical field goals in the fourth quarter before connecting on the decisive free throws. Much earlier, it appeared Middle Township might waltz to a victory.

The Panthers who are ranked No. 3 in South Jersey by The Inquirer used 10 first-period points by forward Merri Jones to take a 19-8 lead. Haddonfield, led by the inside work of George and freshman center Theresa Sanchez, sliced the lead to three, at 28-25, at halftime. The Haddons, ranked fourth, kept on coming in the third period and tied the game at 39. "We were turning the ball over early, and we weren't getting any rebounds until Theresa Sanchez went in the game." Haddonfield coach Trish McCaffery said.

"And Abby George did everything she could to get us into the game." The teams traded baskets in the first overtime. A jumper from the lane by Tina Sanchez (Theresa's sister) tied it at 56 with 55 seconds left. Middle had a chance to win at the buzzer, but Jones' contested layup did not fall. George, who finished with a game-high 32 points, scored all nine of Haddonfield's points in the second overtime. "When we got that lead early, I knew Haddonfield would come back," Barber said.

Wrestling Petrillo became the all-time leading scorer in West Deptford boys' basketball history yesterday. Petrillo scored 29 points, including four three-pointers, as West Deptford crushed visiting Pennsville, 86-54, in a nonleague game. Petrillo now has 1,066 points in his career.

The previous record of 1,063 points was set by Dave Bogacki in 1970. West Deptford put the game away early, jumping out to a 21-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. West Deptford continued to increase its lead and in the fourth quarter out-scored Pennsville by 23-8. In other nonleague games, Sterling squeaked by host Pennsauken, 68-66. Eugene Bennett had 36 points, including five three-pointers, to pace the Indians.

Bishop Eustace held on for a 4643 Victory over visiting Holy Cross. Brian Andrayo netted 15 points for the Crusaders. Jacob Ramage had 21 points as visiting Moorestown topped Cherokee, 64-57. Ken Mims scored 10 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, guiding host Haddonfield to a 79-76 overtime win over Gloucester. The Lions rallied to send the game into overtime but were outscored by 10-7 in the extra period.

In an Olympic Conference American Division game, Cherry Hill East had a chance to clinch the division title but instead was bombed by host Washington Township, 100-80. Their lightweights failed to pin it down. By Matt Toll INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. At the conclusion of the 153-pound match of yesterday's NJSIAA Group 2 state final, Buena coach Doug Castel-lari thought to himself: This has never happened before.

He had just seen his seven best wrestlers Buena's Murderer's Row of lightweights battle Voorhees and fail to get a pin. In fact, the Chiefs had lost four of the eight bouts. This was not good. Voorhees went on to earn three pins and a technical fall in the final five bouts of the match to win, 40-21, at Kittatinny Regional High School. Seeking their first state title, the Chiefs settled instead for their second straight season as state runner-up.

Voorhees (18-1) won its fourth state title, while Buena, ranked No. 1 in South Jersey by The Inquirer, fell to 19-3. "We got beat," Castellari said. "We lost to a better team. I really thought we'd win a couple more of those lightweights, but we just got beat." Buena 144-pounder Bob Hanson, who won a technical fall in the championship match, said the loss was hard to explain.

"A couple of guys just weren't on today," he said. "That cost us. We've been here before. No excuses." Voorhees coach Bob Hall said he knew the match would be won or lost in the lower weights. "We knew that if we kept the score down, we'd beat them," he said.

"I told our kids that not getting pinned was as good as a win. Our kids did what they had to do." Earlier in the day, in a 32-30 semifinal win over host Kittatinny, the Chiefs had lost four of the first five bouts, but Hanson, Dave Castellini (102) and Paul Castellini (153) had come through with pins to boost Buena's score. Then, the Chiefs' unheralded upper weights had come through to pull out the victory. They had no such luck against Voorhees. After Hanson's technical fall gave the Chiefs a 15-13 lead, Paul Castellini faced Voorhees' Eric Hall, one of the Vikings' top wrestlers, at 153.

Hall earned a 164 major decision that all but sealed Buena's fate. "When Eric won, we knew we were in the match," Bob Hall said. "We knew we had the upper weights to win." Those upper weights came through with a vengeance, technically clinching the match with Shawn Garris' pin of Buena's Dan Levari at 217 pounds. It set up a long, long bus ride back to Buena from the North Jersey hills. "I thought, this year, we had a better chance," Castellari said.

Maple Shade heavyweight Jamie Ross came within one point of giving his team a win at Cherry Hill West when he won a three-point decision over Chris Dilba, 15-8, and the teams settled for a 30-30 tie. Another point would have given Ross a four-point major decision. Maple Shade also got pins from Mark O'Brien (121), Joe Giannini (144) and Lou Fiume (187). Cherry Hill West came back with a 58-12 win over visiting Nottingham, fueled by pins from unbeaten Chris Staniec (112), Matt Alemi (119) and Dilba.
