R2 South Jersey THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Monday, June 16, 1997 Death Notices Death Notices Obituaries Constance Pawlak, i teacher and writer By S. Joseph Hagcnmayer INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT Constance DiGiuseppe Pawlak, 80, a longtime English teacher at Camden and Pennsauken High Schools md a free-lance writer, died Friday at her Westmont home. Born and raised in Camden, she was a 1934 graduate of Camden High School. She was a 1938 graduate of Montclair State Teachers College and studied writing at Temple University and at the Breadloaf Writing Seminar in Ripton, Vt. Mrs.

Pawlak taught journalism and senior and advanced placement English at Pennsauken High School from 1965 until retiring in 1979. She Was also the school's yearbook ad-, ministrator. Previously, she had taught the same subjects at Camden High School for many years and was the originator of The Castle Crier, the school's newspaper, in the 1960s. Mrs. Pawlak interrupted her teaching career at Camden High School to raise a family, and that is when she began writing and selling the first of more than 200 confession stories to magazines including Modern Romances, True Story, True Experiences, True Romances and Secrets.

Three of the stories were dramatized on the television program True Stories, and many were translated for foreign publication. "She did it to make money when she was not teaching," said her son Stanley V. Pawlak. She also had written several novels, including some mysteries, that were never published, her son said. "She continued writing, working at her desk at home eight hours a day after retiring from teaching until about a year ago, when she got cancer," her son said.

Even then, she continued writing, although less frequently, until about two months ago. Her writing career got an early start, as she began winning literary contests when she was only 10 or 11 years old, he said. Active in the American Association of University Women's Camden County chapter, she had done public relations for the organization. In addition to her son, she is survived by three daughters, Barbara Unger, Patricia Pawlak, and Rosemary Santulli; seven grandchildren; and a sister. She was the widow of Stanley T.
