As a young woman, Miss Sacchi decided that a safe, unexciting life was not for her. She was determined to fly, even though the skies at the time were not friendly to women. "Men were the only ones then who were supposed to be daring and take chances when they were young," she told a friends me I was bereporter Toll, 1992.

"My ing silly. Women weren't supposed to have adventures." Getting pilot was an adventure. First, it took several years to earn the money for flying lessons. Then, after getting her pilot's license, she searched several years for a job. And when she did, it wasn't as a pilot.

She studied celestial navigation in New York's Merchant Marine School, and headed off to Terrell, Texas, to teach it to fliers in Britain's Royal Air Force. Her next goal was to get her commercial pilot's license. But her eyesight was not good and she had to government dropped barring people wearfrom getting a commerAfter that happened, to the Northeast to in Long Island, PennNew Jersey. 1949, she sold an air- and her own services as a pilot to the president of the Buffalo Weaving Belting Co. became the first to pilot a corpoaircraft.

Later, she ran a seabase on the DelaRiver. Miss Sacchi's most enduring legacy was the frequent-flier miles she while ferrying hundreds of small one- or In plane and woman rate plane ware But Louise Sacchi totaled Louise Sacchi lected $5,000 as runner-up in the single-engine, light class, finishing ninth overall. Earlier that year, she set a speed record for single- engine, generalaviation airplanes from New York to London, making the crossing in 17 hours and 10 minutes, an average speed of 200 m.p.h. Actually, she set the standard. Before her, there had been no official best time.

By the time she closed her ferry business in 1978, she had delivered 333 airplanes all over the world, and never had to ditch one. Reflecting on her career in 1992, she said: "I was 40 years ahead of my time, but things are a little better for younger women. When I talk to them, I tell them, 'You can do it, if you really, really want Miss Sacchi was born in New York City and came to Philadelphia at age 13. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Child in Sharon Hill and worked for a time as a nurse and laboratory technician for the New York Life Insurance Co. She wrote two books, Ocean Flying and The Happy Commuter.

Helen Mannon, 89, civic activist By Kay Raftery INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT Helen Humphreys Fish Mannon, 89, a longtime Main Line resident and former manager in the family jewelry business, John Fish Son in, Bryn Mawr, died Sunday at the Broomall Presbyterian Home. Mrs. Mannon was born in Philadelphia and moved to Radnor Township as a girl. She graduated from Radnor High School in 1925. After their marriage in 1930, she and her husband, Walter McIntyre Fish, moved to Ardmore.

They lived there for about 40 years. She moved to Rosemont Presbyterian Village about 12 years ago and to the Broomall Presbyterian Home two years ago. While raising her three sons, Mrs. Mannon volunteered her time in a variety of school and civic organizations. She was president of the In the Nation and the World Martin Caidin Novelist, 69 Martin Caidin, 69, whose novels were the basis for the TV series The Six Million Dollar Man and the movie Marooned, died of thyroid cancer Monday in Tallahassee, Fla.

Mr. Caidin and Jay Barbree, now a space reporter for NBC News, cowrote the books Journey Through Time and Bicycles in War. Their last collaboration, Destination Mars: In Myth, Art and Science, is set for release July 4. Mr. Caidin was an avid pilot as well as a broadcaster, lecturer, professor and stuntman.

He wrote about 200 books and more than 4,000 magazine articles, many of which dealt with space and aviation. He also wrote several screenplays. The Six Million Dollar Man, a 1970s series starring Lee Majors, was inspired by Mr. Caidin's novel Cyborg. His novel Marooned became a 1969 movie starring Gregory Peck.

The film won an Oscar for its special effects. U. Alexis Johnson Diplomat, 88 U. Alexis Johnson, 88, an ambassador, undersecretary of state, and chief negotiator during the SALT deliberations, died of pneumonia Monday in Raleigh, N.C. Mr.

Johnson retired in 1977 after a 42-year career in the foreign service. After World War II, Mr. Johnson served as U.S. consul in the Philippines and in Japan. While ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1953 to 1958, he also was chief U.S.

negotiator during talks with China about war-torn Korea. After three years as ambassador to Thailand, Mr. Johnson was appointed in 1961 as deputy undersecretary of state for political in the Kennedy administration. He participated in discussions about the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion and the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. While he was deputy ambassador to Vietnam in 1964-65, Mr.

Johnson survived a car bombing at the U.S. Embassy. He was ambassador to Japan from 1966 to 1969 and then was appointed deputy undersecretary for political affairs. Four years later, he was chief of the American delegation negotiating the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. (at Lehigh Services to begin at 10 A.M. Int. Holy Redeemer Cem. two-engine aircraft across all the world's oceans. That career began in 1962, she copiloted a transatlantic flight with an adventuresome grandmother named Marion Hart, then 70.

After ferrying planes on a freelance basis for three years, she founded her own business, Sacchi Air Ferry Enterprises, a trans-oceanic airplane delivery service based in Philadelphia. By 1968, she had made 103 ocean crossings. In 1971, Miss Sacchi competed in a race from London to Victoria, British Columbia; she was the only woman among the 72 pilots. She col- Chestnutwold School PTA and the band mothers of Haverford High School. She was a Cub Scout den mother and taught Sunday school.

She also served on the Delaware County Welfare Council and the Civil Defense Committee during World War II, and was a Red Cross volunteer. In the 1950s and '60s, Mrs. Mannon was a secretary in the Radnor School District. She also worked as an advertising director for Etude magazine, published by Theodore Presser Co. in Bryn Mawr.

From about 1960 through 1975, Mrs. Mannon worked in the jewelry and clock shop John Fish Son, which was founded in 1888 and is still in business on Lancaster Avenue in Bryn Mawr. Mrs. Mannon was an organist at Tabor Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and Lower Merion Baptist In the Region John Stone Retired store manager, 61 John Stone, 61, a retired manager for Acme Markets, died of leukemia Sunday at his home in Malvern. Mr.

Stone was born in Newtown Square and grew up in Willistown Township. He graduated from Marple Newtown High School. His wife of 15 years, Rita Kohut Stone, said her husband lived life to the fullest. "He didn't start playing golf until after he retired, but he loved the game and played in leagues all around the area," she said. He also helped organize a retired golfers' league for VFW Post 5203 in Paoli.

When his sons were growing up, Mr. Stone was involved in Little League and was a coach in the Babe Ruth baseball league. He also coached in the West Chester Adult Baseball League. Mr. Stone was a manager for Acme Markets for 40 years and worked in stores in Philadelphia and Delaware County.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Deborah Casagrande and Sandra James; two sons, Randall and Russell; and six grandchildren. A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, followed by a prayer service at 11. Burial will be in Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer. Karl Edelmayer Businessman, 77 Karl Edelmayer, 77, a businessman who lived in Stone Harbor and Naples, died of kidney and heart disease Saturday at Naples Community Hospital.

He lived in Villanova until about 1985. A 1937 graduate of Girard College, Mr. Edelmayer cofounded Girard Business Forms of Abington (and, later, of Narberth) with a fellow Girard graduate, the late Kenneth Craver. Mr. Edelmayer was president of the company until 1977, when he retired and the firm was sold.
