B4 City Thursday, April 3, 1997 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Death Notices Death Notices Obituaries Lyman Spitzer 82, giant of astrophysics i i I 1 i contributions to space astronomy were legendary. The Hubble telescope, now feeding back incomparable pictures of the cosmos, "was quite in a literal sense Spitzer's brainchild," Ostriker said. In 1946, more than a decade before the first artificial satellite was launched, Mr. Spitzer proposed developing large space telescopes to increase the wavelengths of light that could be covered and to overcome "seeing problems" caused by distortion in looking through the Earth's atmosphere with land-based telescopes. Under Mr.

Spitzer's direction, Princeton scientists developed the 32-inch Copernicus ultraviolet satellite, which made several important discoveries after its 1972 launch. He later steered the Hubble telescope through difficult stages of development and refurbishment. Mr. Spitzer was a giant of theoretical astrophysics and "an exemplary citizen of the university and the nation, an outstanding teacher, an avid mountain climber, and one of the finest and most decent individuals I have ever known," Ostriker said. Mr.

Spitzer earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1935, spent a year at Cambridge University, and earned his doctorate at Princeton in 1938. After serving on Yale's faculty from 1939 to 1942, he did research on underwater sound and its relation to undersea warfare, directing the Sonar Analysis Group at Columbia University's Division of War Research during World War II. He joined the Princeton faculty in 1947, retiring from his full-time posts in 1982. In 1979, Mr. Spitzer received the National Medal of Science from President Jimmy Carter.

He won numerous international honors, culminating with the 1985 Crafoord Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy, the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in fields excluded from those awards. He is survived by his wife, Doreen Canaday Spitzer; a son; three daughters; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, and a brother. Death Notices PIONTKOWSKI a.k.a. ASSOCIATED PRESS TRENTON Lyman Spitzer 82, an astrophysics and plasma physics pioneer credited with conceiving the Hubble Space Telescope and launching thermonuclear fusion research aimed at developing a safe, inexhaustible fuel supply, died at his home in Princeton. Mr. Spitzer was a Princeton University professor, researcher and chairman of the department of as-trophysical sciences for more than three decades. He continued work in his office there analyzing results from the telescope until the day of his death, the university said. Mr.

Spitzer, director of the Princeton Observatory from 1947 through 1979, made contributions that led to fundamental advances in four fields: space astronomy, plasma physics, stellar dynamics and the interstellar medium the gas and dust in magnetic fields between stars from which new stars form. "Astronomy has lost a great scientist and leader, and the many people, scientists and nonscientists, who loved and admired Lyman have lost a great source of inspiration," said John N. Bahcall, professor of natural science at the Institute for Advanced Study, a science think tank in Princeton. Mr. Spitzer was well-known for launching the study of thermonuclear fusion, persuading the U.S.

Atomic Energy Commission in 1951 to try to control the nuclear burning of hydrogen at temperatures found on the sun. Originally called Project Matterhorn, the Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory in nearby Plainsboro became a world leader in efforts to copy the nuclear reactions that occur within the stars and harness the vast amounts of energy released in those reactions. Mr. Spitzer led the lab until 1961. It houses the world's most powerful magnetic fusion reactor, which will be shut down permanently tonight for lack of money.

Princeton Provost Jeremiah P. Os-triker, who succeeded Mr. Spitzer as the university's Charles A. Young Professor of Astronomy, said his In the Nation and the World Tomoyuki Tanaka 'Godzilla' producer, 86 Tomoyuki Tanaka, 86, producer of the Godzilla movies and a former chairman of movie house Toho died of a stroke yesterday at a Tokyo hospital, the hospital said. He produced 22 movies about a giant lizard-like creature awakened from its long slumber by hydrogen-bomb testing in the South Pacific in 1954.

He also produced films with Academy Award-winning director Akira including Kage-musha (The Shadow Warrior). Mr. Tanaka, one of Japan's best-known producers, turned out more than 200 films. Jolie Gabor Actresses' mother, 97 Jolie Gabor, 97, mother of Hungarian-born actresses Eva and Zsa Zsa Gabor, died Tuesday in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The family emigrated to this country beginning in the 1930s.

By the 1950s, Eva and Zsa Zsa were international celebrities, and their mother was one of the movie world's social matrons. The elder Gabor owned jewelry stores in Palm Springs, and New York and retired in Palm Springs, where she continued her role as socialite. Eva Gabor died from a respiratory illness in 1995 at age 74. Marvin Liebman Gay-rights activist, 73 Marvin Liebman, 73, a gay-rights activist who for many years hid his homosexuality behind his work with conservative groups, died of heart disease Monday in Washington. He was a founder of organizations including Young Americans for Freedom and the American Conservative Union.

He worked on Ronald Reagan's 1980 campaign and followed him to Washington a year later to become a public relations official at the National Endowment for the Arts. Mr. Liebman later worked as public affairs director for the Federal Trade Commission. In 1990, he revealed his sexual orientation in a publicized letter to a close friend, William F. Buckley, editor in chief of the National Review.

He later explained that he could no longer tolerate what he saw as an increasing sense of homophobia in conservative speeches and said he felt "like a Jew in Germany in 1934 who had chosen to remain silent, hoping to be able to stay invisible as he watched the beginnings of the Holocau'st."
