THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 2, 1960 Dab Escudero to return 1 Music series launch season Orchestra to play Foss work With amenco band He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and in1937, follow ing his arrival in this country, he attended the Curtis Institute of Music in this city. For the last two decades his music has received considerable attention from major orchestras in this country. Foss' name, however, has appeared only once before on a Philadelphia Orchestra program, when Ormandy played his "Ode" for Orchestra in the 1958-59 season. (however faintly) to the ensemble improvisations of those Gypsy bands or orchestras which flourished in the less formal concert halls and places of entertainment in Europe several generations ago. Lukas Foss is known to American audiences in the three capacities of composer, conductor and pianist.

He was born in Berlin 38 years ago and came to this country in his teens. i Y1W I 111 rt Of singers, dancers Vicente Escudero and his troupe of flamenco dancers, gingers and musicians will give one performance Wednesday evening at Town Hall. -Featured with the earthy Spanish dancer will be Carmita Garcia, Pepita and Goyo Reyes and their ballet, flamenco singers Domingo Alverado and Olga Curro Amaya, guitarists Ro-gelio Reguera and Semico, and pianist Myrna Ruiz. Escudero, who first stunned American audiences two decades ago with his unorthodox style, insists that his current tour marks his farewell appearance in the United States. A Spanish gypsy who as ii young boy practiced heelwork on iron manhole covers in the streets of Granada, Escudero was not born to the theater.

He grew up and danced with rough gypsies in the caves of Sacre Monte, far from the curious eyes of tourists. He earned his living dancing in cafes until the Paris theater claimed him and thrust him into the international spotlight. Famous artists, such as Picasso, von Dongen and Foujita made him the subject of paintings, and young dancers from all over the world sought out to learn the secrets of his pure flamenco art. SCHLOSS Continued from First Page composer, "I considered the possibility of ensemble improvisation, an area that until then had been largely ignored by serious 'musicians." Foss organized a group, the Improvisation Chamber Ensemble, including three young composers, graduates of his composition class at the University of California in Los AngelesCharles DeLancey, Robert Drasnin and Richard Dufallo. These men (DeLancey, percussion; Drasnin, flute; Dufallo, clarinet) with Foss at the piano and Howard Coif, cello, will be the solo quintet at the Philadelphia premiere. STATED BACKGROUND Says Foss, "To the classically trained musician 'improvisation' invariably means solo In solo improvisation, however, the artist is in control of his piece; in ensemble improvisation he relies on others and is responsible to others in solo improvisation the artist need not adhere to any preconceived structural principle." The composer further explains that the improvisation in his new work is for solo instruments improvising within the background of a predetermined and written orchestral accompaniment.

The accompaniments for the concerto's four movements, are by Dufallo, Drasnin, DeLancey and Foss. The movements are, incidentally, a Prelude, Chorale (Varia tions), Intermezzo and Finale (Fugue). This is admittedly an experimental work and the unusual form will be an interesting one. One imagines, however, that it will be less a symphonic jamboree than something akin A. It was South's intention to lead a diamond, finesse in dummy and lose to the king or queen in the East hand.

The return lead of a black suit would be captured with an ace and the diamonds led again. It was the Declarer's hope that a second diamond finesse would be successful and that the play of the ace would drop the remaining honor and make good the balance of the diamonds in dummy. This line of play, if successful, would produce nine tricks. However, West did not cooperate in a manner pleasing to South. When the Declarer led the first diamond, West hopped up with the king and spoiled the whole plan.

North was obliged to win this trick with the ace he could not permit West to get the lead. The jack of diamonds was then played from the board and East won with the queen and returned a small club. The Declarer played the seven, hoping that East held the king of clubs, but it was not to be. West won the trick with the club king and cashed his remaining hearts to defeat the contract.
