January 7,2000 NEIGHBOR Section 3 F2 Huntiey Middle School wins $5,000 in contest Huntiey Middle School is the winner of Spring Hill Mall's Cash Back for Schools program. The middle school will receive $5,000. The students, parents, and staff of Huntiey Middle School brought in the most votes for their school during the two-month program, which began Sept. 1 and ended Nov. 30.

Huntiey Middle School led the pace on the road to victory as Dundee Middle School took second place, and Westfield Community School in Algonquin captured third place. An awards ceremony with check presentations to school representatives will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 22 in Center Court. The winners and their final cash prizes are: Huntiey Middle School, $5,000.

Dundee Middle School, $4,000. Westfield Community School, Algonquin, $3,000. Jacobs High School, Algonquin, $2,000. Huntiey High School, $1,000. Dundee-Crown High School, $500.

Riley Community School, Marengo, $500. Carpentersville Middle School, $500. Larkin High School, Elgin, $500. Larsen Middle School, Elgin, $500. Central High School, Burlington, $500.

Elgin High School, $250. Ellis Middle School, Elgin, $250. Abbott Middle School, Elgin, $250. Eastview Middle School, Bartlett, $250. "We are very pleased with the success of our third annual Cash Back for Schools program," said Becky Zoerner, Spring Hiil Mall.

"We extend our appreciation to everyone in the community who pitched in and voted with their Spring Hill Mall receipts for their favorite school. With the completion of this year's program, we are proud to announce that with participation, and Cash Back finals we have donated $20,000 to the final 15 participating schools." This was the third year that Cash Back for Schools was available for school and community participation. Members of the community voted for their favorite school by depositing Spring Hill Mall store receipts from Sept. 1 through Nov. 30 in the ballot box located in Center Court The school with the most receipts and bonus points averaged with their school enrollment was designated as winners of the program.

Since the program began in 1997, Spring Hill Mall has donated more than $70,000 to participating schools. Cash Back for Schools already has created interest with other schools in the community that did not participate this year. Participating schools from last year will have the first right of refusal for the 2000 program as full participation is limited to a total of 20 schools. For details about getting a local middle or high school involved in Cash Back for Schools, call JoLynn Redies at the mall office at (847) 428-2200. HONOR ROLLS Westfield Community The following students have been named to honor rolls at Westfield Community School for the first quarter of the 1999-2000 academic year.

Strenuous snow shoveling can trigger heart attacks With the arrival of the season's first snowfall, area residents will be forced to make the decision to shovel or not to shovel Dr. David H. Cooke, president for the American Heart Association, Midwest Affiliate, has new information that might make you think twice before you pick up that shovel "In persons who are normally inactive with known or hidden heart disease, snow shoveling can trigger heart attacks and even sudden cardiac death," Cooke stated. The American Heart Association says that if you are middle-aged or older, and haven't been physically active, you should be extremely cautious. Don't lift a heavy shovel piled high with snow.

The combination of sudden physical exertion and the cold increases the heart's workload. It is natural for blood vessels to temporarily narrow in cold weather. The cold can even be more dangerous if vessels are already narrowed due to fatty deposits. Too much strain on the heart during these conditions can result in a heart attack or even sudden cardiac arrest Hypothermia is an additional danger that should be guarded against Hypothermia is a drop in body temperature to a subnormal level and it is potentially fetal. Symptoms are slowed breathing and heartbeat, lack of coordination, confusion and drowsiness.

Here are some more tips from the American Heart Association for younger healthy individuals who make the decision to shovel snow. Wear several layers of clothing instead of one heavy layer. Put on a hat or scarf because most body heat is lost through the top of the head. Protect ears and hands from frostbite. Before you make the decision to shovel snow the American Heart Association strongly recommends consulting with your physician.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should contact 911 immediately. Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting for more than a few minutes. Pain spreading to shoulders, arms or neck. Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath. For information, call the American Heart Association at (800) AHA- TJSA1 or visit the Web site at http://www.americanheartorg.

The American Heart Association spent about $327 million during fiscal year 1998-99 on research support, education and community programs. With more than 4 million volunteers, the American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization fighting heart disease, stroke and cardiovascular diseases. A few may even have been victims who are embarrassed to tell police they have been swindled. "We want every senior in the township to have access to the information we offer in the academy," White said. "Not only is this a way of them learning how to protect themselves, but it helps us meet them and explain the services they have available to them." Police officials plan to conduct another academy in fall. "It's great to see that the first one was so popular.

I've already received some phone calls from people asking about a second one." For information about the Senior Police Academy, call the Besinger Senior Center at (847) 551-4307.
