E4 THE PHILADELPHIA INQHRER Wednesday, April 8, 1998 IN PERFORMANCE Review: Theater Nielsen prime-time ratings ABC CBS NBC Fox Uncharted dialogue on eccentric isle Lt week I 7.7 9.7 8.2 6.4 Season avg. 8.6 9.9 10.2 7.1 A national survey of network TV shows, March 30-April 5. indicates series that are new this season. The Cripple of Inishmaan Written by Martin McDonagh; directed by Jerry Zaks. Playing at Joseph Papp Public Theater, 425 Lafayette through May 10. Tickets are $40. Information: 212-239-6200.

The rest of the cast is a virtual Who's Who of first-rate U.S. character actors: Donal Donnelly (Johnnypateen), Elizabeth Franz (Kate), Roberta Maxwell (Eileen), Christopher Fitzgerald (Bartley), Michael Gaston (Babbybobby), Eileen Brennan (Johnnypateen's mammy), and Peter Maloney (the island doctor). I liked them all, yet I couldn't help feeling that the production as a whole lacks the kinetic sizzle, the exquisite timing and total immersion in character, of the London staging I saw. It's funny, but it's not falling-down funny. Whatever the root of this minor disappointment, whether an attempt to be accessible or a desire to let the comedy's dark side show through its laughs, it shouldn't bother anyone seeing Inishmaan for the first time.

Nor should the fact that Tony Walton's sets, whose principal components are three faux-stone slabs that reconfigure themselves for various scenes, haven't the skewed audacity and poetic sense of place of their London inspirations. It's the skewed people who really count in The Cripple of Inishmaan and what an appealing bunch they are. Peter Maloney is the doctor and Ruaidhri Conroy plays Cripple Billy in "The Cripple of Inishmaan," written by Martin McDonagh. By Clifford A. Ridley JNQl'IRKR THEATER CRITIC NEW YORK Taken all in all, they're about as engaging a collec-tipn of characters as you'll ever see oh a single stage: Kate and Eileen, the old women who run the small country store stocked mainly with canned peas.

Johnnypateen, their contemporary, who trades tidbits of boring gossip ftp goods and slips his nonagenarian mammy a steady diet of booze in a futile attempt to kill her. Helen, the pretty teenager with the foul mouth, tjie easy morals, and the violent disposition, manifest in her penchant ffcr pegging eggs at anything that ijoves. Hartley, her much-put-upon younger brother. Babbybobby, the taciturn boatman I And, most of all, Cripple Billy, the gentle lad with the useless leg and arm whose story is at the heart of Martin McDonagh's yeasty and ultimately poignant The Cripple of In-ishmaan, which opened last night ai. the Public Theater.

The comedy ij. New York's second look in six weeks at the work of the phenome-lially gifted 28-year-old Anglo-Irish playwright, whose The Beauty Queen of Leenane reopens Tuesday at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre after a sold-out Off-Broadway run. Beauty Queen, which mixes black comedy and stark melodrama in chronicling the bitter duel between 4i desperate, unmarried Irish oman and her nasty, selfish mother, is a darker play than The Cripple of Inishmaan, although director Jerry Zaks' production at the Public doesn't overlook the casual ciuelties of man and God that lurk hfeneath Inishmaan's laugh-a-min-ute surface. But the two plays share tiie exuberance of plot and language that mark McDonagh as a special playwright indeed. "The Cripple of Inishmaan proceeds from a historical fact: In 1934, the American documentarian Robert Flaherty arrived on Inishmore, one of three craggy Aran Islands off tfce west coast of Ireland, to film what became the classic documentary Man of Aran.

McDonagh sets his play in that year on the neighboring island of Inishmaan, where various people proceed to row to In- SHOW NetwortRatingShare SHOW NetwortRatingShaw 1. CBS NCAA Bask bad Ch. CBS, 17.8 28 SO. The Closer CBS 7.613 2. Seinfeld NBC16.425 SI.

One of them is the orphan whom everyone calls Cripple Billy, who has lived with his "pretend aunties," Kate and Eileen, since his parents drowned under mysterious circumstances when he was an infant. He's a sweet boy, a bright boy, but he's tired of Inishmaan "the laughing at me, and the sniping at me, and the life of shuffling to the doctor's and shuffling back to the doctor's and pawing over the same oul books." And so he goes to Inishmore and even farther, spending months away from home while his aunties fret and the other islanders mutter darkly about his probable fate. Because McDonagh is that rare playwright who still believes in surprise, I shouldn't reveal any more, although it's safe to report that the ending is decidedly bittersweet. Anyway, notwithstanding its exemplary plot, The Cripple of Inishmaan is driven less by events than by its characters' lovable eccentricity and the endearingly idiosyncratic, meandering dialogue that gives voice to it. The talk in Inishmaan is the talk of people who not only say what's on their minds but say it four or five times just because they like the sound of it.

It's grand stuff, a kind of cross between Sean O'Casey and S.J. Perelman, and it makes this play the funniest new comedy I've seen in ages. Zaks' production is blessed by the presence of the Cripple Billy of the play's London premiere, Ruaidhri (pronounced Rory) Conroy, whose winning air of introspective innocence finds its perfect physical correlative in his coltish, gangly frame. Also from London is the Helen, Aisl-ing O'Neill, a spitfire of a lass whose outward grime can't disguise her attractiveness; it's a cinch to understand why Cripple Billy has his cap set for her, even at the risk of a good poke in the eye. 'Titanic' has lost its space The lost-at-sea gang has given way at last to Lost in Space.

After 15 weeks at the top and 11 Oscars, Titanic surrendered the number-one spot to the space adventures of the Robinson family. Lost in Space grossed $20.2 million in its opening weekend while James Cameron's epic earned $11.5 million. Bruce Willis' new thriller, Mercury Rising, took in $10.1 million for third place.
