Tuesday, October 31, 1995 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER C7 Morning Review: Music A trio takes its time and hits its stride No additional performances are scheduled for the events in these reviews. By Tom Moon INQUIRER MUSIC CRITIC In the two years since its debut suggested new ways to think about the relationship between roots music and hip-hop, G. Love and Special Sauce have learned the musical value of patience. Once, this trio would motor through its material as if locked in a race with death. Even some of the most greasy, laid-back grooves seemed unnecessarily hurried and rarely included such obvious elaboration as a guitar solo.

Sunday at the Theatre of Living Arts, G. Love and Special Sauce opened a three-night stand with an entirely new attitude. Recognizing that New Orleans-style second-line rhythms work better when they cook slowly, the trio took its sweet time. Drummer Jeffrey Clemens and bassist Jimmy Prescott established disci- bold, focused strokes as engrossing as high-energy hip-hop. Dutton, particularly, has been busy since the debut: He's learned to play harmonica with authority, and has worked to make his guitar lines more fluid and lyrical.

This effort was evident Sunday. Whether dusting off an old-time stomp and or setting up the shimmering vamp of "Blues Music" one note at a time, Dutton contributed solos and lead-lines that soared with the poise of a veteran. At times during the philosophical "Chains 3" and "Shootin' Hoops," he courted the raw, frenetic edge of the music; just when it sounded like everything would fall apart, he returned to the pulse and averted disaster at the last possible second. The ride was, needless to say, exhilarating. Some tickets remain for the final show tonight.

plined, deceptively simple rhythmic patterns, and guitarist Garrett Dut-ton (a.k.a. G. Love) followed with fervent, spring-loaded guitar melodies that approached the heat of roadhouse blues. The result: Music that sauntered and rambled and never broke an easygoing stride. Drawing from its eponymous debut and its more varied follow-up, Coast to Coast Motel, G.

Love and Special Sauce utilized elements of vintage music to honor timeless groove wisdom. Again and again, on songs that echoed everything from Bo Diddley blues to "When the Saints Go Marching In," the trio showed that it has grown into a confident unit, able to support G. Benjamin, 5, and Adrielle Slaugh, 8, gaze raptly at the two triceratops. DINOSAURS from C1 a huge plant-eater represented only by its head and long neck. Along with the props, or representations thereof, we get relevant clips from the movie and brief summaries of the movie's many (apparently deliberate) inaccuracies.

To begin with, for example, many of the creatures in Jurassic Park date not from the Jurassic period, but rather the later Cretaceous period. (Dinosaurs lived from 245 million to 65 million years ago, during the Me-sozoic Era, which they defined.) In another case, artistic liberty seems to have foreshadowed scientific discovery: While the velocirap-tors roaming Jurassic Park were too large, a relative, the utahraptor, discovered shortly before the movie's release, is of comparable size. As in New York, this part of the exhibit includes only the tail of the notorious T. rex, in the process of crushing the movie jeep. But the Franklin Institute, in its lobby, provides a scientifically accurate model of the entire beast.

The rest of "The Dinosaurs of Jurassic Park" offers a combination of movie and paleontological artifacts: storyboards and drawings, actual dinosaur eggs with shell fragments still intact, dinosaur skulls, insects and a lizard trapped in amber. Three CD-ROMs supply more nuanced information about dinosaurs, as well as remarkable digitized re-creations of dinosaur activity. Then, of course, there is the inevitable gift shop the "DinoStorus." To complement the show, the Franklin Institute has developed a "Monster Movie Magic" demonstration, held in the Musser Choices Forum at various times during the day. The first-rate interactive presentation provides a short history of movie special-effects technology, from stop-motion photography and 1 Jl claymation to robotics and computer-, generated imagery. One lucky child even gets to play Godzilla and crush a miniature model of the Eastern State Penitentiary, while the scene is captured on videotape.

Beginning this coming weekend, the museum will also open a small exhibit of early film equipment another laudable attempt to expand the educational dimension of this latest dinosaur extravanganza. In Home for the Holidays, my character isn't burdened by anything, she's sort of queen of the roost. She has a wonderful time in her own controlled environment." Bancroft doesn't live to work. Disbelief filtered across his face, and he sat down, crossed his legs, picked up the paper and repeated, 'Yes, dear, he is The sight of him imitating me made me laugh." Bancroft said that when she met her future husband 34 years ago, she was rehearsing for the Perry Como TV show. "I was on stage singing and dancing, then we paused for a rest. This man shouted to me from the wings, 'Hey, I'm. Mel Brooks, and you're Anne "There was something about the way he said it, with authority and great aggression, that instantly made me admire him.

The next evening we went on a date and I learned about his life as a stand-up comic, a writer with Carl Reiner on Sid "When I finish a movie, I always reward myself, usually with a shopping trip to an antique store. I haven't had time, so I figure I owe myself at least four treats." Looking up over her reading glasses, which rested an inch down her nose, she added, "I never want to work. Most women love dilemmas, but I'm also a perfectionist.

"When I read a story," she explained, "I either feel it or I don't. If I feel the character on a very deep level, then a certain passion takes over. It's hard to maintain your energy and to achieve what you want unless paused and added, "I hope you didn't miss me in Gorilla at Large." Laughing, she continued, "Finally, I went back to New York. My training at the Actor's Studio had changed my perception of movie star to actress, so when I auditioned with Henry Fonda for the Broadway-bound Two for the See-Saw, I attacked the role with a vengeance. Careerwise, it was the best move I ever made.

I won a Tony for that show, which opened the door for the next year when I starred in The Miracle Worker on Broadway. And when they made the movie, I did it." (Patty Duke joined her in recreating the Broadway roles.) Bancroft returned to Hollywood, with her second Tony Award in tow, as a respected actress not a starlet. The film of The Miracle Worker, performed with passion, won her the best actress Oscar of 1962. This was followed by another Oscar nomination for The Pumpkin Eater (1964). Then came The Graduate (1967), and Bancroft admitted, "That role, the evil Mrs.

Robinson, who seduced her daughter's fiance, is still part of my life. Even today, I know when The Graduate plays on television. Young men look at me differently. Suddenly they are rushing to open doors, get me a chair, one even threw his jacket over some mud in the street. After all this time, it's amazing they still think there might be some of that Mrs.

"The last two films I've had female directors, Jocelyn Moor-house American Quilt and Jodie Foster Home for the Holidays and they were a delight. I don't often have an idea, but when I did, they were most responsive." Asked what kept life centered, Bancroft replied, "My husband. We don't go through life making small talk. I shortened it to Anne Marno, but casting agents still only thought of me when they needed an Italian girl. The name Bancroft just came out of thin air.
