Solving murder of beloved uncle By Desmond Ryan INQUIRER MOVIE CRITIC The conventional form of the murder mystery begins with a body, preferably murdered under gruesome and baffling circumstances, and the arrival of the detective on the scene to embark on the case.

Lourdes Portillo commences on this formal note in The Devil Never Sleeps and then departs on a fascinating journey. The Los Angeles-based Chicana filmmaker's quiet Sunday morning is disrupted by a phone call with the devastating news of the death of her beloved Uncle Oscar back in Chihuahua, Mexico. The gunshot that killed him was either suicide or murder, and when Portillo comes home to seek answers, many strongly suggest the latter. Portillo deploys an imaginative range of techniques and allusions to illuminate the investigation. The Devil Never Sleeps is not so much about the violent death of Oscar or even the many mysteries that the film uncovers about his personal and business dealings.

Rather, it is about the life and frictions of the family in which he was such a dominant and forceful presence even after his abrupt departure. r' 4 Frederic Gorny (left) and Elodie Self-definition and its struggles By Carrie Rickey INQUIRER MOVIE CRITIC It is 1962 in a peaceful Gallic village far from Algeria, which has just been made independent of France. But in Wild Reeds, that nation's involvement in Algeria has mortal repercussions for the secondary school students in the village, teenagers struggling to define themselves intellectually and sexually as their country sorts itself out politically. In his involving film, one of the best in the festival, director Andre Techine creates living characters instead of sociopolitical symbols. There is a bourgeois boy who platonically loves the Communist girl, but finds himself sexually attracted to boys.

There is a farmer's son working for his baccalaureate who might have to marry the widow of his brother, a French soldier killed in Algeria. And there is the pied-noir, the right-wing French national born in Algeria, who loves the Communist girl as much as he hates her politics.
