Keating INQUIRER THEATER CRITIC Tom Stoppard structures both The Real Inspector Hound and After Ma-gritte, presented by Bristol Riverside Theatre, as crime mysteries.

If the intentions of the playwright could be phrased in criminal terms, it would be said he wants to commit parody, with the intention of making an audience laugh. Too bad the caper doesn't come off. The blame lies not with Stoppard. He did his part of the job more than well, cramming both Hound and Ma-gritte with verbal and physical humor, devising ingenious plots that are funny in themselves. The fault rests primarily with his Bristol accomplices, led by director Edward Keith Baker.

They fail to pull off some key portrayals and fail, too, to locate the antic tone that both fast-moving, farcical plays require. Stoppard's objects of parody in Hound are the British manor-house murder mystery and theater critics. (Or at least, pompous English theater critics; he couldn't have had us gracious, self-effacing American reviewers in mind.) Moon is a second-string critic who is envious of the first-string critic, Birdboot, whose chief interest is using his position to advance his ro- mantic pursuits of actresses. Stoppard shifts the focus between them and the murder mystery they are covering, a piece filled with all the conventions of the genre a madman on the foggy moors, shifting romantic liaisons, and plenty of murders for the intrepid Inspector Hound to solve. Stoppard knits all threads together in a denouement that deftly, if absurdly, integrates Birdboot and Moon into the manor-house story.

Several performances fall short here, but the most deficient and devastating to the show's success is that of Joe Warik as Moon. His English accent, in this most British of plays, is entirely missing and with it his grasp of the character and his comic potential. Edwin C. Continued on next page lorn Mccarmy, wno accepted ms acting award by thanking his chiropractor, his auto mechanic and his dentist. "Man, I've been battin' around this town for 30 years and I've never won nothin'," he said, before proceeding in a more serious vein.

The award ceremonies were interspersed with excerpts from the work of the three nominees for the $2,500 Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News award for theater education: the American Music Theatre Festival's Rainbow Connection Program, the Philadelphia Young Playwrights Festival, and Freedom Theatre's Performing Arts Training Program. The award was presented to the Young Playwrights Festival. The ceremonies also included a number of novelty events, including a special appearance by the late actress Ethel Barrymore, as sonated by actress E. Presenters included playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and actors David Garrison, Donna McKechnie, Laurie Beechman and Kim Hunter. Among the 29 companies eligible for 1997 awards, the Wilma received the most nominations, 19. The Walnut received 14, the Bristol Riverside Theatre 10 and the Arden Theatre Company and Villanova Theatre 9 apiece. The most-nominated production was the Wilma's Avenue cited nine times.

The award was accepted by his son, Jamie Wing. The Oversight Committee also voted a second posthumous award, a citation of special recognition, to the late Adrienne Neye, who served as company manager and stage manager for a number of Philadelphia theaters before her death in February. The playing space at 2030 San-som Street formerly occupied by the Wilma Theater was recently named the Adrienne in her honor. Her husband, John Cannon, accepted the award.

The $5,000 CoreStates award for community service was presented to InterAct Theatre Company's In-terAction program, which uses theater to illuminate social issues. Emcees for the awards ceremony were actor Bruno Kirby, who Walnut Studio 3 production of Oleanna. Vying for honors as best production of a musical were Avenue Bristol's 110 in the Shade, the Walnut's 1776, the American Music Theatre Festival's Another Midsummer Night, and Puttin' on the Ritz's Sweeney Todd. Nominees and winners of the acting and production awards were chosen by a 40-member committee of theatergoers and theater professionals from among 98 eligible productions. Winners of the awards for education, community service, and an emerging artist were selected by separate panels.
