United's lineup is so strong that Roy Wegerle, who is back with the U.S. national team, never got off the bench. But at the team's core are Etcheverry and Moreno, who are from Bolivia, and Diaz Arce, who is from El Salvador.

"Those three guys up front it's very hard to stop all three," Myernick said. Even in the rain. Last year, D.C. United won the MLS Cup in near-hurricane conditions in Foxboro, Mass. This year, the weather was just slightly better.

"I think I associate this sport with the smell of damp wool," MLS commissioner Doug Logan said. After accepting the Rothenberg Trophy (named for the Los Angeles lawyer who founded the league), United coach Bruce Arena praised the "fighting power" of his team. "We've tried to be a legitimate professional soccer organization," Arena said. "We've made it, gentlemen. We've made it." Colorado was the team with the Philadelphia-area connections.

Sweeper Peter Vermes of Delran, who plays indoors for the Philadelphia Kixx, emerged as a team leader and was given a lot of credit for the Rapids' turnaround. The Rapids also featured forward Steve Rammel, a graduate of West Deptford High, who joined them in a trade in a trade for Wegerle. But the home team again proved it sets the standard for soccer in this country. And the only sellout in town yesterday was at RFK, not for the Redskins at their new stadium. By Mike Jensen INQUIRER STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON Major League Soccer is soaking with tradition. Two years in, this we now know: MLS championship games are soggy affairs, the crowds show up anyway, and D.C. United sticks around to accept the hallowed Alan I. Rothen-berg Trophy. And people don't ask for their money back.

Ignoring a driving rainstorm yesterday at RFK Stadium, United showed off its artistry in defeating the Colorado Rapids, 2-1, for its second MLS Cup title. In front of a home crowd of 57,431, United scored the first goal off a pass that Raul Diaz Arce allowed to go through his legs. Teammate Jaime Moreno thought he was a spectator on the play until the ball got to his foot. Moreno buried the ball in the net on the way to becoming the MVP of the game. Later, with United holding a two-goal lead, playmaker Marco Etche-verry played the entertainer, trying to put a shot through goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann's legs.

Underdog Colorado, not even a playoff team last season, held up its end. The Rapids were creative, just not as dangerous. With his team down by a couple of goals, defender Marcelo Balboa tried a bicycle kick. Goalie Scott Garlick stopped it. With 15 minutes left, the Rapids got a goal from Adrian Paz, and they challenged to the end.

"I was entertained," Colorado coach Glenn Myernick said to reporters. "I hope you were. I'm sure the fans were." Tony Sanneh, a supporting player, set up United's first goal and scored its second. In the 37th minute, after a run from midfield, he made the pass that Diaz Arce let go through his legs. Moreno said he had been surprised to see the ball coming to him.

He thought Diaz Arce was in better position. Diaz Arce said just the opposite that Moreno had been in better position. When the ball got to him, Moreno circled away from the goal, then buzzed a shot past Hahnemann. The clincher came on a header by Sanneh in the 68th minute after John Harkes turned and looped a pass to him near the far post. Harkes said he had been telling Sanneh all season in practice to "get to the back post." dump Crisp down Shea Stadium and build a modern version of Ebbets Field, the New York Post reported.

Charles Bark-ley was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and resisting arrest after an altercation at a bar early yesterday. The Houston Rockets star was jailed for five hours before being released after posting $6,000 bond. Barkley was accused of throwing a bar patron through a plate-glass window after the man tossed a glass of ice at him, police said. The 20-year-old patron was treated at a hospital for a minor cut in his upper right arm. The former Sixers star disputed the police account.

He said he had pushed the man, and that the man had fallen back into the window. Barkley said he had never met the patron, and that the man had thrown the glass of ice without provocation. "I'm going to defend myself at all times. I've made that clear in my years in the NBA," Barkley said yesterday afternoon. "If you bother me, I'm going to whup you." downtown Orlando began as the bar was clearing out. Barkley told police that the patron had thrown a glass of ice at him and three women who were sitting at his table. Barkley chased the man to the front of the bar, where an off-duty officer tried to intervene. According to a police report, Barkley picked up the man and threw him through the window. Friends of Barkley's then tried to get him to leave.

He was stopped and arrested a half-block away. The Rockets were in Orlando for last night's exhibition game against the Magic. Barkley played and was ejected midway through the fourth quarter of Houston's 101-89 loss after he argued with officials and tossed a ball into the stands. Rockets spokesman Tim Frank said team officials would discuss the bar incident with Barkley. "We don't believe he would overreact to a situation," Frank said.

Barkley, an 11-time all-star, has faced similar accusations before. In every case, the charges have been dropped. Shippensburg completed 9 of 15 passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-29 win over Bloomsburg. Indiana's Terry Throm completed 20 of 25 passes for 255 yards in a 25-20 win over Edinboro. Kutztown defensive end Aldain Lob-ban returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown in a 24-21 defeat of Millersville.

Lock Haven linebacker Jon McFarland returned a fumble for a touchdown in a 17-3 win over California. Tennis Brenda Schultz-McCarthy of the Netherlands defeated Dominique Van Roost of Belgium, 64, 6-7 (74), 7-5, in the Challenge Bell final in Quebec City. Petr Korda returned to the top 10 for the first time in more than four years when he beat Richard Krajicek in straight sets to win the Eurocard Open in Stuttgart, Germany. Korda, whose career has been plagued by injuries, beat the 1996 Wimbledon champion, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, 64. The victory, his first on the tour since January 1996 and the eighth of his career, vaulted Korda nine places in the rankings, to No.

Crisp, the only coach in Tampa Bay's six-year history, had the longest tenure with one team of any current NHL coach. The dismissal came after days of speculation and with Tampa Bay mired in a seven-game (0-6-1) win-less streak that dropped the Lightning into last place in the Eastern Conference. General manager Phil Esposito informed the players of the move before a morning skate in preparation for last night's game against the Los Angeles Kings. Esposito said former Buffalo Sa-' bres coach Ted Nolan was among the candidates to replace Crisp.

Crisp, a member of the Flyers' Stanley Cup champions in 1974 and .1975, coached the 1989 Calgary Flames to the Cup. College football Texas Christian football coach Pat Sullivan, 47, whose Horned Frogs have been through disciplinary up-. heaval and controversy since last year and are 0-7 this year, said he would resign after this season. The former Auburn quarterback and 1971 Heisman Trophy winner led the Frogs to winning seasons in 1 1994 and 1995 and an Independence Bowl bid in 1994. However, a series i of disciplinary problems decimated his roster last year.
