R4 South Jersey THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Thursday, November 6, 1997 Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Obituaries Peter S. Monska, 71, basketball coach ant football coach at the time, said "The kids played their hearts out for him. It was a combination of putting really good coaching together with really talented kids." "It was the glory days of basketball in South Jersey, and Moorestown dominated the golden era," said Bob Kenney, former Courier-Post sports editor. Having had professional experience, "he taught them all sorts of things that put them above everybody else." In 1959, Moorestown's great team was one of three South Jersey squads to go undefeated and to capture state group titles, Kenney said. Mr.

Monska's team produced several South Jersey hall of famers, including Ed Douglas and Bob "Lu-jack" Meredith. One year, seven of his players received votes for All South Jersey honors. After Moorestown, Mr. Monska moved to Delaware Township High School (now Cherry Hill High School West) where he coached the team to several sectional titles. Mr.

Monska continued coaching professional teams as well, including the Camden Bullets and the Al-lentown Jets of the Eastern Basketball League. He coached as recently as the mid- to late-1980s for the United States Basketball League. He is survived by his wife, Mary Andrea Monska; three daughters, Kathryn Nastasi, Susan Monska Trump, and Jennifer Monska; two grandsons, and two sisters. Monska, 71, an area basketball legend whose career included playing at West Chester State Teachers College and later coaching Moorestown High School to two consecutive state championships, died yesterday at his Cherry Hill home. Born in Philadelphia, he was a 1944 graduate of Northeast High School, where he gained fame as the goalie of the first city high school soccer team to go undefeated. But basketball was Mr. Monska's first love, and after finishing high school he pursued it relentlessly. A World War II veteran, he continued playing in the service on courts in the Philippines.

In 1946, he entered West Chester State Teachers College (now West Chester University), where he played for four years with a team that went 17-2 in his senior year. He continued playing with the Philadelphia Sphas and the Washington Generals the hapless opponents of the Harlem Globetrotters. And he also was a coach for both teams. In 1956-57, he took over the coaching of a young Moorestown High School team. His first year, the team went to the South Jersey finals before losing to Audubon by two points.

The team scored more than a thousand points in the season for the first time in the school's history, said Bill Klansek, a Moorestown teacher and roach when Mr. Monska was there. That was the last loss a Monska team would suffer for nearly three years. His Moorestown squads went 22-0 in 1957-58 and again in 1958-59. And, then in 1959-60, the squad didn't lose a game until the state finals.

In 1960-61, the team went 16-7 and took its fourth consecutive South Jersey Group title and lost again in the state finals. f'His coaching philosophy was run, run, run," said Klansek. Dick Loring, a Moorestown assist Joseph D. Learning, 82, retired veterinarian O'SKEA On Nov. 5, 1997, A.
