Chad Bosch, a junior tailback, then scored the first touchdown of his Rutgers career to give the Scarlet Knights a 10-7 lead. A 33-yard field goal by Rutgers' Nick Mike-Mayer with 7:07 left in the first period opened the scoring.

The field goal came after Rutgers' Joe Diggs blocked a Virginia Tech punt, giving the Scarlet Knights a first down at the Hokies' 32-yard line. Virginia Tech went ahead 7-3 on a 1-yard run by Ken Oxendine later in the first period, regained the lead on Druckenmiller's TD pass just before halftime, then used superior field position to dominate the second half. There were about 20,000 no-shows at rainy Rutgers Stadium yesterday, and the home team's offense could have been put in the no-show category as well. Trying to snap a three-game losing streak against Virginia Tech in a Big East game, Rutgers, the league's No.

1 team in rushing and total offense, had trouble moving the ball. The result was a 45-17 loss, which left the Scarlet Knights at 1-5 for the season and 0-3 in the Big East. By holding Rutgers to one second-half score, Virginia Tech improved to 5-2 and 2-1. Rutgers finished the game with 138 yards rushing and 145 yards passing. Scarlet Knights junior tailback Terrell Willis needed 42 yards to become the school's all-time leading rusher.

He finished with minus-2 yards on seven carries. "Virginia Tech has the kind of defense that does that to you," Rutgers coach Doug Graber said after the Scarlet Knights had been bottled up. Virginia Tech led 14-10 at halftime, then scored 31 second-half points. That included a 51-yard run with a recovered fumble by defensive end Hank Coleman and a 71-yard interception return by linebacker Myron Newsome. Rutgers' only second-half touchdown came on a 9-yard pass from quarterback Ray Lucas to wide receiver Steve Harper at the beginning of the fourth period.

Lucas was banged up during the game and had to split time in the second half with backup Robert Hig-gins. Neither quarterback was particularly effective, Lucas completing 10 of 25 passes for 86 yards and Higgins going 3 for 13 for 59 yards. iTime of Possession "Our answer in the past has been to hang in there with our running game, but we didn't do that today," Graber said. "We just couldn't consistently get anything going." Rutgers nearly got out of the first half with a three-point lead, but Virginia Tech took a 14-10 advantage into the locker room after a double penalty on the Scarlet Knights helped put the Hokies only seven yards away from the end zone. Virginia Tech scored with six seconds left in the half, on a pass from quarterback Jim Druckenmiller to wide receiver Bryan Still.

The double penalty two dead-ball calls cost Rutgers 20 yards. The game officials failed to identify the culprit or culprits, and just what happened was a mystery. Virginia Tech had taken possession on its own 38-yard line with 1:09 left in the half. It took the Hokiee seven plays and 52 seconds to reach the Scarlet Knights' 27, from where the double penalty was marked off with 17 seconds on the clock. That put the Hokies in position to grab the lead.

With Virginia Tech having won the toss and chosen to take the second-half kickoff, being ahead at intermission was no small thing. Rutgers, which punted on four of its six first-half possessions, finally put together a scoring drive that began with 6:27 left in the half and ended with 1:14 remaining. Lucas made three big plays to keep the 74-yard, 15 drive-play alive. On third and 5, Lucas sidestepped a big rush and hit wide receiver Reggie Funderburk for a 15-yard gain to the Virginia Tech 34. Later, on fourth and 5, Lucas found flanker Steve Harper at the 22.
