For nine years, he ran a magic shop in Philadelphia before a sweet tooth lured him into producing his own brand of jams and jellies, which he and his wife sold at.Read-ing Terminal Market bearing the label of the South Jersey Jam and Jelly Co.

His next career move was the Cordon Bleu in Paris, the cooking school where he earned a chef's diploma in 1991. For a time, he was the assistant pastry chef at Le Bee Fin, and also worked briefly in the kitchens of several other area restaurants. His most recent incarnation was connoisseur of tea and proprietor of the House of Tea on South Fourth Street near Bainbridge, where he was only too glad to introduce customers to the enjoyment and the arcane knowledge of teas from around the world. Four years ago, when interviewed in his tea shop by Jim Quinn for Inquirer Magazine, Mr. Litt playfully summed up his attitude toward his life: "I've had a wonderful life, it's still wonderful.

I'd like to say I wouldn't change my life for all the tea in China. But that's more or less what I've done." Contributions to Kellman Academy, co Cong. Beth El or The Polltz Foundation, c0 Cong. Sons of Israel, Cherrv Hill, NJ. By Andy Wallace INQUIRER STAFF WRITER i Nathaniel Litt, 65, who during his lifetime was an architect, a circus clown, a magician, a chef, a jam-maker and a tea-shop owner, died Tuesday of a heart attack at his home in Queen Village. For Sir.

Litt, changing careers seemed about as easy as changing his socks. If he got interested in something, why, he simply did it. I That attitude apparently began after he was seriously injured in an auto accident in 1969. On the way to the hospital, he realized that he might die before he had been a circus clown a lifelong dream that he had deferred because his mother wanted him to be an architect. Born in New York City, he had attended Columbia University and Pratt Institute, then studied at the schools set up by Frank Lloyd Wright in Arizona and Wisconsin.

At the time of the accident, he had been working as an architect for 17 years and owned his own firm in New York City. His wife, Margaret Williamson Litt, sided with his mother on the question of careers. Aware of the lure of the life of a clown, she had for years hidden from him any show business trade papers that mentioned job openings for clowns, fearing he'd run away and join the circus. But after his accident, she changed her mind. Hoping to banish his depression, she told him' about an article she read about Ringling Brothers' plans for a "clown college" in Florida.

And so, after the bruises had disappeared and' the broken bones in his jaw, arm and leg had mended, In the Region Frances Longaker Former medical secretary, 80 Frances Brower Longaker, 80, of Lansdale, a retired medical secretary, died Sunday at St. Mary Manor in Lansdale. Miss Longaker was born in Lansdale and graduated from the former Lansdale High School in 1934 and then from the former Taylor School of Business in Philadelphia. She served in the Women's Army Corps from 1944 to 1949, including time with the Army of Occupation in Japan. After her discharge, she completed medical secretary studies at the former Franklin School of Science and Arts in Philadelphia in 1951.

She then moved to Richmond, and was a secretary for a surgeon until her retirement in 1985, when she returned to Lansdale. Miss Longaker was a member of AARP and the Senior Adult Activities Center in Lansdale. She is survived by sisters Catharine L. Kinter, Mary J. Mundy and Grace E.

Harrity Former firefighter, 77 James A. Harrity, 77, a former Philadelphia firefighter, died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Broomall. Mr. Harrity was with the Fire Department from 1947 to 1959 and maintained his membership in Local ,22 of the Firefighters Union. He was born in Philadelphia and graduated from the former South A 1969 traffic accident led Nathaniel Litt to retire as an architect and pursue other, less conventional occupations.

Mr. Litt sold his business and hobbled south to sign up. His son Andrew, just 5 at the time, found it hard to comprehend. "Daddies don't run away to join the circus," he said then. "Only little boys do." In the years since, Litt had done many things.

Designing buildings was not one of them. For several years, he toured with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus and other shows before settling down in Haddonfield, N.J., to became a businessman. But he continued to clown around, forming his own troupe, Nat Litt's All Star Clown Revue to perform at malls and shopping centers throughout the country, or to perform for fraternal organizations and schools. He also appeared with circuses in Bulgaria, Moscow, Mexico and Paris. For several years, he ran the How To Do It Book Shop, a craft and east Catholic High School.

He worked as a mechanic for Boeing Helicopters in Ridley Township in the rotor blade department for 20 years. He served as a third class gunner's mate in the Navy during World War II. He lived in Broomall for 27 years. Mr. Harrity was a member of the American Legion, the League of the Sacred Heart, and the USS Missouri Member Reunion.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sara Dougherty Harrity; three daughters, Mary Cruse, Joanne Ibbotson and Barbara Neal; two sons, James and Joseph; 13 grandchildren and one daughter. A daughter, Donna Fuchs, died in 1993. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 tonight in the Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, Sproul and Lawrence Roads, Broomall. A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m.

tomorrow at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church, West Chester Pike and Radnor Drive, Newtown Square. Burial will be in SS. Peter Paul Cemetery, Marple. In lieu of flowers, the family sug- gests contributions to the American Cancer Society, 600 N.
