Mr. McNally also was the general manager of the 1949 Eagles, who won the NFL championship. Mr. McNally attended St. Anne's Elementary School t I l iff 1 Vince McNally built a champ in Port Richmond and Ro- man Catholic High School, where he starred in football and basketball. He won a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, where he played for coach Knute Rockne, finishing his career in 1927. A backup quarterback, he set team records for punt returns and captained the Irish basketball team in his senior year. "You had to get to know Vince," said broadcaster Bill Campbell. "He was not an outgoing type of guy. In fact, he wanted to be strictly behind the scenes. He never wanted any publicity he only wanted to win." After a brief tenure as an assistant football coach at Roman, Mr. McNally moved to the West Coast as an assistant coach at St. Mary's of Mor-aga, Calif. While there, he cemented In the Region Phillip A. Todd Downingtown landscaper, 31 Phillip Anthony Todd, 31, of Downingtown, a landscaper, died Tuesday of injuries suffered in a fall from a tree while deer hunting in Birmingham Township. Davis Ex-kindergarten teacher, 71 Marian Ferree Davis, 71, of Newtown Square, a homemaker and former kindergarten teacher, died of IBest to wad it evey ciu. a friendship with another Notre Dame grad, Buck Shaw, then the head coach at St. Mary's archrival, Santa Clara. In 1949, Alexis Thompson sold the Eagles to a local group known as "The 100 Brothers," each of whom payed $3,000 for his share. The president of the group was James P. Clark, a friend of Mr. McNally's from his youth in Port Richmond. Clark immediately hired Mr. McNally as general manager, a position he held as long as Clark's group owned the team. Mr. McNally's first draft choice as GM in 1949 was Chuck Bednarik of Penn, a future NFL Hall of Famer. The team won its second straight NFL championship that December, beating the Rams in Los Angeles, 14-0. After a string of unsuccessful seasons in the 1950s, Mr. McNally made the two major moves that resulted in the 1960 championship. He fired coach Hugh DeVore after a 4-8 season in 1957 and brought in Shaw, who had retired as head coach of the 49ers after the 1956 season. In those less-intense days of the NFL's infancy, prior to national television contracts, Mr. McNally used a unique device to get Shaw to relocate to the East. "Vince gave Buck a six-month contract so he didn't have to be here year-round," said Jim Gallagher, a former Eagles traveling secretary. Along with hiring Shaw, Mr. McNally drafted such future Eagles stars as Tommy McDonald and Tom pneumonia Monday at Riddle Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Davis, a 1948 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, taught kindergarten classes for the next four years for the Lansdowne School District. She was born in Philadelphia and raised in Havertown, graduating from Haverford High School in 1943. In the early 1950s, she moved to Drexel Hill, and in 1965, to Newtown Square. She had been a member of the Church of the Saviour in Wayne for the last 12 years and was a former member of Manoa United Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Davis enjoyed the seashore and maintained a summer home in Ocean City, N.J., for many years. She is survived by children Gwen E. Prestwood, Lee A. and Sharon L.; a sister; three grandchildren; and a friend had who cared for her for the last nine years, Charlotte Min-isci. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, Sproul and Lawrence Roads, Broomall. Friends may call there after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia. Eagles GM Brookshier and got future all-pro end Pete Retzlaff off the waiver wire for $100. But the first move engineered by Mr. McNally after hiring Shaw was the most important for the 1960 title team: He traded for quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, who had worn out his welcome in Los Angeles. The McNally era peaked in 1960. The team lost its opener, then won 10 straight to clinch the Eastern Division. The Eagles beat the Green Bay Packers in the 1960 championship game at Franklin Field. Mr. McNally is survived by his wife of 53 years, Celeste; their son Vincent, Jr.; their daughter, Kathleen; and one sister, the last of 10 McNally siblings.
